I use VirtualBox for development and hardly xhyve. xhyve has a tendency to hang and it as you noticed yourself handles hibernation really badly. Also, when you get into a bad state, xhyve can literally force you to restart your notebook. This part I don't get. A user should not create application (their work) in the default/openshift namespace. They are reserved namespaces. Your work is in 'myproject' or any other namespace you are going to create. > Right now, I would say our current approach of system:admin with no > password is a bug AFAIU, there is even no other way then to use certificate based authentication for sytem:admin. This account is special. You literally cannot login any other way. This is different to the 'admin' user in CDK. In CDK we had an 'admin' user (on top of the openshift-dev user) which got assigned the cluster admin role - https://github.com/projectatomic/adb-utils/blob/master/services/openshift/scripts/openshift_provision#L196 So one can add the same role to the developer user in Minishift, either per default or via an addon (something we are working on right now) or one creates another admin user as per CDK. I wonder why it is supposedly cool. It is known to misbehave and it does not even have a management console, leaving me sometimes wildly guessing on what's going on. At least VirtualBox and Hyper-V offer me some way to inspect/manage virtual machines. I've heard xhyve is performs better. Personally I have not tests this nor seen any numbers. Given that I prefer a more stable environment over one which might or might not perform a bit better, I stick to VirtualBox for now. > I do not even know what files to go delete...but I do see it misbehaving. I'd rather see us working out how you can give the same presentation using Minishift with a decent performance. You are the administrator of your instance it's just the way `oc cluster up` setting up users doesn't create a separate user for admin with password but have system:admin which can be used to gain administrator privilege for your instance and then add any user as admin with password. Now as per thread you need something similar experience for user like we had for CDK-2.x and that something we can do once addon features are in place which will be soon. -- Praveen Kumar https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Kumarpraveen From bgurung at redhat.com Wed Mar 29 07:05:52 2017 From: bgurung at redhat.com (Budh Gurung) Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2017 12:35:52 +0530 Subject: [Devtools] CDK Minishift Beta 1 Testing In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: On 29 Mar 2017 10:18 a.m., "Praveen Kumar" wrote: > > On Wed, Mar 29, 2017 at 4:50 AM, Burr Sutter wrote: > > I need to make another pass through my document but overall, things mostly > > work. > > > > https://docs.google.com/document/d/12NDWT_k6vgePaoD6gpihAqtpdQcyNXAKLVDtdS4eEXU/edit?usp=sharing > > > > I added FIS and radanalytics (our Apache Spark work) tests. > > > > So...I heard there was a Beta 2 I should look at :-) > > Actually Beta 3 [0] is out and you should try that :), let us know > your experience. They will be lucky to get a single node to work :-) And there is one big win with the manager UI - you can actually SEE it running. In demos, I have used that UI to make the point "I have a whole cloud architecture running in 6GB of RAM, see it right here". Plus, VB is available on Windows and Mac, the majority of end-users should be Windows based if we do our jobs right (80% of the developer market still runs Windows). So, teaching people with VB is more "portable" across operating systems. In any case, I am on VB now, I will see if it is more stable than xyhve. Out of the box you don't have a persistent config and the default values from the CLI parameters apply. If you run 'minishift start -h' you will see the defaults you are after. This might also help https://minishift.io/docs/managing-minishift.html#minishift-runtime-options I tend to agree, however, that it would be nicer to show the defaults for 'config view' as well. Do you mind creating an issue in https://github.com/minishift/minishift/issues > and the order of the displayed properties changes which is odd. At the moment the config is read into a map and then iterated over. On a given system I would expect it to be the same, but then again the iteration order is not defined, so we would need to programmatically order the results prior to printing to screen. Please create an issue :-) --Hardy -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... There is an open issue for proper multi instance support - https://github.com/minishift/minishift/issues/126 We are working with the Minikube side to make sure we align our approaches on this. For now you can work with MINISHIFT_HOME. By setting this env variable you can point the Minishift home directory to another directory which gives your two instances as well. There is still a little gotcha with that, since the hypervisor does not allow you to create two instances with the same name. You can work around this, but using once xhyve and once VirutalBox. This is an issue we can easily address though. --Hardy -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... As mentioned yesterday, system:admin is a special account which can only use certificates to connect to the cluster. You will need to give the 'developer' user the cluster-admin role in which case you can log in as developer and see the default namespace or you need to create a new 'admin' user also with the cluster-admin role. --Hardy -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... This post looks useful https://blog.docker.com/2016/05/docker-unikernels-open-source/ "HyperKit is based around a lightweight approach to virtualization that is possible due to the Hypervisor framework being supplied with MacOS X 10.10 onwards. [...] HyperKit is built on the xHyve and bHyve projects, with additional functionality to make it easier to interface with other components such as the VPNKit or DataKit. Since HyperKit is broadly structured as a library, linking it against unikernel libraries is straightforward."
