The discussion of which seems to have spilled into the fedora board list and then died out with out much conclusion. In regards to your clamav spec, I was hoping to work on that this week... make sure it matches the fedora guidelines and test upgrades from older clamav versions and/or the ancient ones in epel now. I'd be happy to provide back any changes and let you look over the spec before I commit it. kevin -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... No, definitely not -- I actually made a bit noise about that particular topic months ago already somewhere before it came up again from your mail. But the people we need to finally get a definite say are busy with F8 atm and afaics. But feel free to bring it up yourself on fedora-advisory-board right now -- the list is open to everyone and there is nothing else I would do in one or two weeks from now as well. Further: I don't think the topic is that that critical -- as multiple people said, Fedora spec files are meant to be free to be used and modified by other parties. Some people even think that implicitly clarified already as Fedora as a whole gets distributed under the GPL (read that with a AFAICS, IANAL and "that's how I understood those people"). Even further: I would like to see it clarified, as I'm involved with other repos as well that sometimes use Fedora spec files. CU knurd P.S.: > Because I think I see a pattern there :) Come on, we are all adults here. Such sort of comments don't help. * mmcgrath will make sure will cron the script that checks for missing deps in testing * nirik hasn't had a chance to look at testing lately but will do over the next few days; the plan is to do the testing -> stable move on (or around the) 21th this month * the big thing is that we want to get broken deps fixed up in testing before any move; OTOH we can leave some things in testing if we want; but we should work towards a proper testing repo without broken deps in general as well, as broken deps look bad even in testing * http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Tasks/Rhel51 -- knurd/nirik * we have no eta on 5.1 (well, we have one: jeremy> | "when it's done") * http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Tasks/RhelMetaData -- stahnma * not much moving here; "stahnma_> | I will send out a query on list" * http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Tasks/Misc -- update.carefully file in CVS? * we had a problem with sqlite -- the Fedora maintainer updated the EL4 package; it would have replaced the CentOS package, which we try to avoid; packages was withdrawn from push-queue; maintainer who did the update was not aware of the "we ship sqlite in EL4 with a lower EVR then in CentOS" agreement * Jeff_S will place a file called "UPDATE-CAREFULLY" file with some explanations in it in the CVS dir of that handful of packages that are in CentOS-base and not in EL; that should serve as a hint for the maintainers and hopefully avoid such things in the future. * http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Tasks/Misc -- yum-cron -- knurd * knurd talked to the CentOS maintainer of yum-cron; things hopefully should be solved over the next few days * in case anybody wonders: yum-cron is in centos5-base similar to how sqlite is in centos4-base (see above); but the situation is a bit different here, as the Fedora package is kind of "upstream" for the CentOS package afawcs; the Fedora package since CentOS took it got some bugfixes and the maintainer and some other people think it would be best for everyone if the improved version would make it into both CentoS as update and into EPEL for those that want to use it on RHEL * http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Tasks/Misc -- permission to use spec files in other projects * as said on the list: bring the issue up to the board again once F8 is out * a improved clamav for EPEL * nirik still considers to update clamav in EPEL (maybe use the one from dag ["nirik> | the dag spec is much more sane than the fedora one."] or a similar scheme); he just hasn't had time to move forward with that... Would anyone else be interested in working on that? Then please speak up! * meetings * seem the meetings at 23:00 UTC don't work to well ("stahnma_> | turns out, I like the daytime better; after all my complaining; :)") * maybe we should try to find a more dynamic schedule; maybe once a month a later time; or something like that; and don't forget the general target: do more on the list * we'll try meetings at 17:00 utc every second week for now; thus next meeting on 20071024? [...] No. If I want to open a Fedora- oder EPEL-competitor-repo tomorrow I still can't be sure that nobody sues me when I take the Fedora spec files as base for it, as it's not written down under what terms precisely the spec files are available and reusable by other parties. IOW: IANAL, but "Red Hat Legal says they should be as open and licensed just like everything else" and '# Choice of license is either "same as the package itself" or something extremely permissive like MIT/X11.' doesn't sound like somethign that's legally binding. Rebuilds are supported only to the extend that they remain compatible is that way I understand it. It seems unlikely that CentOS kernel would enable FUSE since it would break ABI compatibility. Message-ID: <471F8DCC.7070708@redhat.com> Hello. I have a question about building java packages for epel4 using mock (fedora-4-i386-epel.cfg). There are several yum repos that mock uses to populate the buildroot. But the ant package (and all of its dependents) are not in any of them afaict. In RHEL4, ant and its brethren are in the RH Developer Suite v.3 channel. Is there a recommended epel/centos yum repo that has ant? Or, alternately, how should I add ant and its dependencies to my epel4 buildroot? I found this - http://watzmann.net/blog/index.php/2006/10/19/using_mock_to_build_rhel_packages_take_2 - but I'm hoping there is a solution that doesn't involve setting up yet another repo. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... If a package you need is not included in base, updates, EPEL or the buildsys system, you have to a) either add yet another repo containing the packages you need or b) wait for the required packages to be available in EPEL (or even try to push them yourself there) In this particular case, since the package you need is available via a different RH channel, one should get in touch with RH and see if they are willing to transfer it either to EPEL or to base, because EPEL will never knowingly compete with RH channels and it cannot contain packages which have dependencies outside the base/updates/EPEL suite. Since ant is included in RH5.0, I'd say there is a fair chance to have ant included in base. Message-ID: <472481CB.7070008@leemhuis.info> Hi all! I'm preparing the testing/ -> stable/ move right now; I noticed that in testing there are often two versions of a package; random example: koan-0.6.1-2.el5.src.rpm koan-0.6.2-2.el5.src.rpm I think that's fine for the proper repo (one can then reinstall the older version for a short-term-workaround after a update hit the repo that broke something), but I don't see much need for it in testing, as one still can go back to the package from testing normally. Thus I propose we keep only the latest version in testing/ in the future. If nobody yells loudly over the next few days in response to this mail I'll "just do it"(tm). I excluded some: - all those packages that have broken deps (I hope nothing slipped through; does anybody want to recheck?) - all those packages that entered EPEL for the first time in the past days - yum-cron, for now, in the hope to find a way that makes both EPEL and CentOS happy If anybody wonders how it did it here is how: * download all packages for i386 locally * move all the new stuff and yum-cron away * run repoclosure * move everything with broken deps away * run repoclosure again * move some now broken deps away * repo was sane then according to repoclosure Then I took the list of SRPMs from the packages and feed that to the "ToStable" script from the EPEL push scripts. Is there a mandatory time period for which packages must stay in the testing repository? Otherwise I could build any number of packages a few hours before it gets mass moved into stable repository and those packages wouldn't have any chance for testing and feedback. Not discussed yet. I chose to not move those to stable that were totally new but for updates I was more lacy. I'd suggest this for the future: - brand new packages need to stay in testing for at least 4 weeks (maybe 6?) - we don't push any new packages to the testing repo one week before the next big testing -> stable move - we send a heads up to the maintainers next time during that week so maintainers have a chance to say "no, don't move foo to stable because of bug #foo" > Otherwise I could build any number of packages a few > hours before it gets mass moved into stable repository and those > packages wouldn't have any chance for testing and feedback. If you look at the report closer you'll notice that the packages that were in the needsign queue from plague before that push got moved into testing ;-) But yeah, but the whole process still needs a bit of testing and fine tuning :-) CU knurd From smooge at gmail.com Tue Oct 30 17:29:19 2007 From: smooge at gmail.com (Stephen John Smoogen) Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2007 11:29:19 -0600 Subject: General thoughts on what EL linuxes are in use. Message-ID: <80d7e4090710301029k39ebad6en15369c01ccb20825@mail.gmail.com> So I have been looking over my current workplace and asking around at my old places to get an idea about where things were.. and came up with the following statistics.. which are really rough ended. I am trying to get better numbers versus off the cuff. Servers [~800 boxes across various sites [not counting clusters]] EL-2 ~5% EL-3 60% EL-4 30% EL-5 ~5% The majority of EL-3 items are going to be in place for at least 2+ more years with many of them probably going to EL-5 and some going to EL-4. It usually depends on what the Enterprise software is supported for, how comfortable the people are jumping to another version if they dont absolutely have to, etc. Workstations/Desktops [~300 or so] EL-3 ~5% EL-4 75% EL-5 20% EL-4 is going down and EL-5 is going up. The EL-3 are people who have a desktop that needs to interact exactly with the code they have run on their servers... and the desktops arent used much except for that. Most of the clusters are at either EL-4 or going to EL-5 in their next interaction and will be running on whatever they are based at for hardware lifetime [~4 years] so that scientists are using the same code-bases. If they need newer stuff they will go to the next cluster. I started asking around yesterday after reading the Scientific Linux email about them having to put EL-3 on life-support versus end-of-life because several science projects have not been able to move to a newer code base and might not until their next 'project' starts. It got me to think about what EPEL software I could place where and when (beyond my desktop and 1-2 servers). The biggest realization was that I couldn't use FUNC for a while because most of our systems will not work with it :). Myers) Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2007 11:14:58 -0400 Subject: Questions about EPEL Distribution Message-ID: <47289BF2.4000508@redhat.com> I am working on a project that requires EPEL RPMs as part of the installation process. We also need to support environments where the target machines are disconnected from the Internet. My question is, how would you (the EPEL maintainers) prefer to have these packages distributed? Here are the options as I see them: 1. Include the needed EPEL RPMS on our distribution media. 2. Include the epel-release RPM only and provide instructions for setting up a local EPEL mirror and modifying the epel.repo file to point to that local mirror. We will certainly give credit to the EPEL project in our documentation and clearly indicate which RPMS are pulled from EPEL regardless of how we distribute things. Let me know if anyone here has an opinion on this topic. Ejabberd requires Erlang. Ejabberd is in the stable repository, but Erlang is in the testing repository. So if you don't enable the testing repository you can't install Ejabberd due to missing dependencies. Can either Erlang or Ejabberd be moved so that they are both available in the same repository? I'd be fine with Ejabberd being moved back to the testing repository.
