Oh dear.  Then the hardware must be different.  Or possibly there is a
problem with the IDE cabling.

If you're sure the harware is identical then try swapping out the IDE
cabling.  Then try upgrading the kernel.  If that doesn't help, you may need
to try forcing DMA.
