Does it have to? Not necessarily. But Andrew Overholt, the Fedora maintainer of gjdoc, wanted to drop it from the distribution so that he wouldn't have to maintain it anymore. But it could be re-introduced as a new package in Fedora Extras. But instead of keeping gjdoc, I'd prefer to see sinjdoc's output improved to match gjdoc's, and highlighted source code linking support added to it, in the interests of limiting maintenance overhead (plus it's simpler to point people at one free javadoc solution). I think that the real issue isn't what we do in Fedora, but that gjdoc is more or less unmaintained upstream. So, while we were upgrading the whole toolchain to deal with Java 5, gjdoc got left behind. Then we had to find the cheapest way to pick up the pieces ... not very fun and not the best results :( Longer term I suppose OpenJDK will be opening their javadoc "soon". I have a problem with Fedora Eclipse. It was crashing a lot when using the Omondo EclipseUML plugin. This might be a javaVM memory problem, and I might have solved that one. I'm about to test that. While looking for clues, I looked through the plugins using the Help > Software Updates > Manage Configuration... tool. A lot of plugins are listed as missing so the features that need them can't find them. I suppose the reason might be related to installing features after the install of Eclipse from fc updates.(?) I checked the filesystem, and found that features were looking in /usr/share/eclipse/[plugins|features] for things located under /usr/lib64/eclipse, and vice versa. Googling, I found this: >> It's because we moved the platform-specific stuff to /usr/lib (or >> /usr/lib64). I fixed the build problems, so you are able to rebuild pdftk now (I rebuilt it in Rawhide last week). That bug is a suggestion that pdftk should use the system iText, for ease of maintenance. The work to allow this needs to be done upstream though, since pdftk bundles a version of iText with many local modifications. I sent mail to pdftk's maintainer about this (I CC'd you on the note) but I haven't heard back from him yet. Anyway, for now pdftk is buildable in Rawhide. Yeah, I think the problem is that the feature validation doesn't take into account the split install (use of .eclipseextension, etc.). Ben Konrath (CCd) would know more about this. > Does this mean that plugins from eclipse.org and other sites that aren't > built specifically for Fedora Eclipse won't work, or does this only > concern Fedora built plugins? Plugins from elsewhere should function fine in interpreted mode (ie. no gcj-compiled bits). If there are bugs, they're either class library bugs or interpreter (gij) bugs. I don't think your crashes are caused by the split install. Andrew -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Without 100% certainty, I'm pretty sure it can be safely ignored. I would say this is something we need to investigate but I'm focusing my time on the future update manager and integration with yum, etc. I'm going to send a note regarding that work today or tomorrow. I'm on rawhide i386. Here's what I'd do. Add this code to gij.cc: { FILE *poo = fopen("/tmp/log", "a"); for (int i = 0; i < argc; i++) fprintf (poo, "\"%s\" ", argv[i]); fprintf (poo, "\n"); fclose (poo); } You might want to print getpid() here too. Find the OOM printer in the gc, and add getpid() to that too. Find the *exact* list of args that was passed to the gij process that caused the OOM. Paste them to this list. You should be able to move everything to /usr/share/eclipse but you'd be on you own if you end up with problems. If you do this I would suggest that copy rather than move so that the %post scripts don't complain if they can't find certain files. Also, you should remove the /usr/share/eclipse/links/ directory so that eclipse doesn't look for stuff in /usr/{lib,lib64}/eclipse/. I can't find one in /etc/rpmdevtools/spectemplate-*.spec Normally people just use existing spec files as a templates. Well the first problem is that there is a file: --------------------------------------------- public class UrlLabel extends JEditorPane implements HyperlinkListener { private final String url; public UrlLabel(String url) { this (url, url); } public UrlLabel(String url, String description) { this.url = url; setContentType("text/html"); setText(""+description+""); setToolTipText(url); setEditable(false); setOpaque(false); addHyperlinkListener(this); } ------------------------------------ the setContentType line causes a null-pointer exception, so I commented out that line. Of course it should be fixed instead of commenting out, but without it at least i can test the program as a whole. What should I do to get this fixed? It seems the bug is in the java implementation, not the program, right? I don't think this is what is happening in this case. If there are dependencies missing in the SDK location ($baseLocation in PDE build stuff, I think), it'll fail. I just witnessed the same thing trying to update Mylar for Mik. > At the same time, they don't seem to prevent anything from building, > but > every plugin is getting errors like these during build. Yeah, I don't think they're stopping anything. It's all the same bug with the update manager not resolving multiple update sites, I think. There were a couple of problems with your spec file which I have corrected with the attached a patch. The photran build also hit a bug in package-build so you will need to install a new version of prepare-build-dir.sh (attached). Something like this should do the trick: sudo mv prepare-build-dir.sh \ /usr/share/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.build_3.2.1.r321_v20060823/templates/package-build I will update package-build in the FC-6 eclipse package and push out a new release. Expect to see it in a couple of days. Also, there are three features included in the Photran zip: org.eclipse.photran_feature org.eclipse.photran.intel org.eclipse.photran.refactoring_feature Your spec file (with my patch) is only building org.eclipse.photran_feature. You will need to add another call to package-build for the org.eclipse.photran.intel and org.eclipse.photran.refactoring_feature features if you want to build them. Thanks for packaging up this plugin! Feel free to post any other questions you have. Cheers, Ben -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Not that I am aware. Would you like to do it? I can help you get started if you've never packaged anything before. Also, I can provide you with a place to host the package if you don't have a website and if we can't get it into the Fedora 7. You want StringReader and StringWriter instead, or perhaps CharArrayWriter. I don't know why there are two of these -- weird. I've run your test program with cacao + classpath HEAD and it works. I'm on a Fedora 6 and I've tested it with the system gcj (4.1.1 20070105) and with sun java 6u1 and it works too. I think this can be either a regression introduced classpath and then fixed or a gcj-1.5 issue. I've added this same comment to the bug report hoping it will be useful.
