I wasn't commenting thinking it's really 32 vs. 64-bit, but only after seeing this comment I did a test under windowed mode. Now I can confirm it happens on 32-bit F8, too. BTW, I upgraded from some ancient AstroMenace rpm (notice upper case) to current astromenace with astromenace-wrapper and I noticed that it's by default limited to 640x480 video mode (the menu entry has --mode argument). It's not very pollite to force screen resolution/window size on users :) Lam -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... John, can you please no pass --mode in the .desktop and instead patch astromenace so that the default when no config file is found becomes 640x480, that was what I meant initially, that way people can change things if they want, and we still have sane ( == working everywhere) defaults. I'm attaching three patches: astromenace-640x480.patch - this sets 640x480 windowed (BPP 0 means this) mode as the default when there's no config file and as a fail-safe mode when a mode read from configuration isn't available. Tested and proved working in both situations. You should propose this upstream :) astromenace.spec.patch - a patch for the spec file for your convenience astromenace.desktop.patch - finally, a fix for the issue that was hurting me, that's being forcing one mode :) BTW, there's a newer version of the AM source available from Viewizard website. I haven't tracked changes and I haven't tried if the "stuck mouse" problem is fixed already. I was going to do it, but I was preparing and testing the patches and now it's really time for me to sleep, sorry :) Lam -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I'm not really sure, what consequences (other than fixing the stuck mouse issue) will it cause. It's my second hour with AstroMenace code (or any SDL game code) and I don't know Russian at all (almost), so it really should be reviewed by someone understanding the comments and/or game variables. Basically, mouse is stuck because the game runs SDL_WarpMouse in the main loop, because it's re-appearing the final score window all the time. In the full screen mode, this is not a problem, but when run in the window, there is additional code for grabbing the mouse when playing and ungrabbing when using the menus. That code also got run in a loop. I was trying to be smart instead of just commenting out the SDL_WarpMouse line. Please check if I haven't broken anything in the process. Message-ID: <4767D52A.1000808@fedoraproject.org> Hi, One of the advantages of custom spins are that they can release asynchronously as per http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/CustomSpins. There is a lot of interest in the games spin and it has maximum number of downloads among the Fedora 8 custom spins. http://spins.fedoraproject.org:6969/ I am interested in doing a mid release games spin update if there are enough additional games or interesting updates to existing games. It also has the additional advantage of fixing bugs or providing new features in other software included in the spin. Are there compelling reasons to provided a updated spin now? Would that be better as a CD image variant? The number and total size of packages updated was huge, so I think this *is* a compelling reason (I did a screenshot at the time with the intention to blog about this but had not enough free time). A CD image variant is, I think, orthogonal to the DVD spin. An update for the DVD spin should be in DVD format and a CD image would target another niche of users (and it has to include a careful selection of games, "best of breed"). -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro From sundaram at fedoraproject.org Wed Dec 19 13:13:39 2007 From: sundaram at fedoraproject.org (Rahul Sundaram) Date: Wed, 19 Dec 2007 18:43:39 +0530 Subject: Games Spin Update? I would be interested to hear from game packagers too as to the compelling new features in the games included in the spin. Is there any modifications to the package list desirable? I have added uqm, Pychess and Alien Arena based on user requests. There are two things still on the wishlist 1) Warsom - Gaming engine is Quake 3. Cartoon style action. Gaming data is non-free afaik but could potentially use autodownloader 2) Second Life - Not really a game but is under popular demand. Review is ongoing at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=233946. If we could speed up the process a bit, it would be very much appreciated. > > A CD image variant is, I think, orthogonal to the DVD spin. You might want to wait for the imminent Unity release. I believe they are planning to include an update.img file that will fix the yum hang and/or the 586/686 detection problem. It will probably be worth grabbing any fixes they have for the installer that wouldn't be picked up by just using updated packages. I will be using it for my Games Spin attempt using Unity's installer and the latest updates (including updates-testing if it seems to work) that I plan to give out as Christmas Presents. It won't pull in the optional packages, uqm-content-3domusic and uqm-content-voice. I can add them manually to the kickstart file if it improves the game experience considerably. I'd recommend adding uqm-content-voice. That way when you talk to beings, you get an audio of what they are saying as when as the displayed text. The voices actually add some nice color to the game. uqm-content-3domusic isn't really a big deal since that is just alternate music. If space becomes a problem, we might have to reconsider this. I have been talking to rel-eng already and they feel that me or the games SIG should be able to vouch for the quality of the release. I will do a local spin with the changes and test it and we will probably do a initial beta release, publish a test matrix and then get some feedback before doing a general respin update. Stay tuned. Sounds good to me, I usually map Caps Lock to "reload" since its right next to WASD. Though I don't think I've actually run into this problem, as yes John Carmack has a severe case of NIH syndrome and does not use SDL, and I usually remap Caps Lock to Control... What platforms is this a problem on, anyway? The only one I know of is Macintosh ADB keyboards, and how relevant are those anymore. Did this patch ever get merged anywhere? http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2005/12/msg00214.html Doing some googling, it seems the problem is actually some "obscure" X11 implementations, which is not something that really affects Fedora... -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Fedora has more custom spins, too much to be carried by the mirrors, so some of the spins, like the Games one, are available only as torrents. See the list of active mirrors and the content they have: http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org//mirrorlists/publiclist//Fedora/ -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro From sundaram at fedoraproject.org Fri Dec 28 14:52:19 2007 From: sundaram at fedoraproject.org (Rahul Sundaram) Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2007 20:22:19 +0530 Subject: Games packaging guidelines Message-ID: <47750DA3.2060106@fedoraproject.org> Hi I noticed that we have some games specific guidelines at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Games#head-367e7208aacfec8f8aff1b34c1795e43c0967ecd Shouldn't that be somewhere under packaging guidelines or atleast be referred to from it? I can propose this as a draft to the packaging committee if the games SIG is supportive of that. For someone newly packaging a game, the games specific packaging guidelines are not visible at all currently. Rahul
