Soon we will be able to drop Kakadu." "My ultimate goal is to make the Second Life client available in the official Fedora repository. This is made difficult by the client's dependence on some closed-source libraries," Lerwick says. He took on the job of optimizing the OpenJPEG library to bring it up to a usable level of performance, and wrote a patch for the Linux client to use OpenAL for audio. They were both named Mike and one's last name was Lampi, I have forgotten the other's. They may still have a copy of the game saved somewhere. It was liked in our group at the time. To be on the safe side, we would want to avoid using any remotely trademarkable item that has appeared in an ST tv show or movie. Yeah, that sucks, but Paramount/CBS fiercely protects their property, and this is a heavily merchandized field (just look at how many licensed ST computer games exist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_games#Video_games ). Alternately, we could ask Paramount/CBS. *snicker* I think you know what that will bring. ;) So, if and only if someone goes through and removes everything trademarked from it... and does it correctly... So they are ok for Fedora inclusion. Unfortunately I've lost the relevant mail, so we will need to ask them again, moreover we will need a packager for this, actually we (the Games SIG) really need some more packagers, there are still many good games which could be packaged, but most of us are handling all the packages we can. If really nothing stands on the way to include warsow in Fedora, I'd be extremely happy to manage that task. I've already packaged openarena so hopefully it shouldn't be a big problem. I'd like to propose to add information about DRI checking wrapper to Games SIG Packaging Guidelines. It could look like that: "If a game requires 3D accelerated graphic card you have to use DRI checking wrapper which will show an error dialog if DRI is not available explaining about Free Software and 3D drivers and then exit. What you must do is: 1) Add: "Requires: opengl-games-utils" 2) Add to %install: "ln -s opengl-game-wrapper.sh $RPM_BUILD_ROOT%{_bindir}/%{name}-wrapper" 3) Add "%{_bindir}/%{name}-wrapper" to %files 4) Change the .desktop file Exec entry from "%{name}" to "%{name}-wrapper" This all assumes your main binary name == %{name}, otherwise adapt as necessary. If you already have a wrapper script for one reason or the other, you can incorperate the checkDriOk function directly into your wrapper, no need todo a wrapper wrapper, see vegastrike's vegastrike-wrapper.sh CVS file as example." Well, that text is a bit vague, which is why I asked for clarification in the past, and indeed its fine to distribute, still I believe it would be good to have a mail from upstream (which I had but unfortunately lost) stating that its fine to redistribute it freely as long as its not modified. There is no difference between what is included in the games spin and what is included in the repository. If there are any problems, do report them to http://bugzilla.redhat.com. All I can say is that sound seems to work fine for me. About your comment reagarding shareware to: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Fedora_8_Games_Spin_Live_DVD_released It does contain opensource engines for shareware games, the menu entries for those engines download the shareware datafiles through autodownloader, as discussed. So in a way it does contain some shareware games, but many others too. The name change should avoid the main potential trademark issue, but Valley Games might still threaten to sue even if they don't have a good case. Some of the artwork is clearly too similar to the original artwork to use. (In particular on legion markers, but at least some alternate colors are provided with artwork that wasn't in the original game.) (Valley Games is redoing the artwork, but the original creators would still hold copyright on it.) Also the board design has potential copyright issues as well. The masterboard is fairly unique and the interconnections of the various terrain types may be copyrightable even if the artwork isn't the same as the original board. Also each of the battle boards also has terrain where the actual locations of particular terrain types might be copyrightable even if the artwork is different. The data for the maps can be changed and does include some variants, so it might be possible to ship the game with only some varient data and let people grab the "standard" maps from sourceforge. I would be willing to try to package the game. OK, I will start doing some ground work on it. I have a link to some page with information on being a packager and I'll go over that to get started. I'll ask questions as I need further help. At a first cut, how much do you think I should cut out? I am thinking the artwork for the original legion markers markers is a definite no no, but the rest of the stuff is at worst borderline. I have some scanned images of the original masterboard and battleboards I can show someone when I think I am getting close. How does one handle subtracting stuff from a distributed tar ball? I would think that shipping the source tar ball from the project would be a problem, as just having a patch remove the artwork wouldn't work for avoiding copyright issues. Tom 'spot' Callaway (tcallawa -- at -- redhat -- dot -- com) is the one to talk to when it comes to legal questions, those scans will come in handy then. I think it would be best if you first use your common sense to make something you think is clean or whitish-grey and then send it to him. > How does one handle subtracting stuff from a distributed tar ball? Correct, in this case what you should do is include a modified tarbal (with things removed, please put replacements in a seperate tarbal) and put comments above the Source0: in the spec explaining howto regenerate the distributed source tarbal from the original sources. I can probably do something simple. One option would be to reuse the images from the extra colors that were added by the colossus developers and were not in the original game. I can probably have a simple script do that and it should work OK if the graphics are repeated if the two colors contrast. That should be enough answers for now. Thanks. Things like editors may be a lot of fun too so they are important, they deserve at least a "utilities" group. However, I am not sure they do not belong in the "games" group: Widelands has the level editor (map designer) built in the main binary but Wesnoth has two different binaries. In the first case the map editor is (indirectly) part of the games group and in the second don't (both are examples where I could see myself using the editor).
