I'm seeing the same thing with an RX2600 server at the lab here - death at perfmon. I was unable to get _any_ kernel messages to the serial console. On that machine, we had noticed that kernels older than 2.6.10 need console=ttyS0 while newer kernels need console=ttyS3. But neither worked for me. I in fact tried ttyS0,1,2,3 and 4 and gave up... I did do an install on to an Altix ia64 system yesterday and that worked as expected. Looks like someone needs to dig in to it further to the RX2600 issue. PS: They are currently working through some installer issues so it seems to only be possible to install a minimal system, at least for the ia64 development stuff at this moment. > > Andreas > > > Prarit Bhargava wrote: > > >Andreas Hirstius wrote: > > > >>Hi > >> > >>I'm trying to install it on an HP rx2600, but already the pxeboot > >>kernel fails to boot. > >>I do not even get any output on the serial console :-( > >>The VGA goes blank after some messages about starting the perfmon > >>subsystem. > >>Unfortunately I can't provide more information.... > >> > >> > > > > > >Andreas, > > > >I haven't played a lot with the pxeboot kernel -- it may not be > >working. Exact commit for this change is at: Thanks for the tip here. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out. On my test system, the kernel is at this level: 2.6.12-1.1485_FC5. I saw in Prarit's mail that there is a slightly newer one available. I'll try it for fun in a moment. Fedora includes patches with these names when building the kernel from SRPM (among others): patch-2.6.13-rc6 and patch-2.6.13-rc6-git7. The fix you discuss here is already part of the kernel and can be found in patch-2.6.13-rc6.bz2. -- Erik Jacobson - Linux System Software - Silicon Graphics - Eagan, Minnesota From erikj at sgi.com Thu Aug 18 00:15:01 2005 From: erikj at sgi.com (Erik Jacobson) Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 19:15:01 -0500 Subject: [Fedora-ia64-list] Problems with Fedora core 4 on itanium. I guess I'll start trying to isolate patches out if nobody has better suggestions. I'll have to do this as I have free time though. Here is my hand written note on this. Cool! I was just installing a version of rhel4 on to our rx2600 to make testing easier so I didn't have to use the installer CDs. Now I'm curious if we wedge a kernel fixed up like you described above (my test kernel has the SGI XP (SSI) disabled already) in to the install CD, if it will install an rx2600 correctly including disk discovery. It's possible the reason your system didn't find disks is because the kernel modules for mpt fusion may have changed between rhel4 and fc4 development (?). That's just a guess. I installed this on an Altix ia64 system first and it still worked there. I then installed it on the rx2600 that had a version of rhel4 on it. It blew up, but late in kernel messages. I believe I was hitting the same problem you were with the right kernel modules not being in place to mount root. At least this confirmed we weren't hitting the same old issues. Then I busted open the boot.img file and updated the kernel modules and kernel itself within (including the modules cpio file within the initrd). I used that to boot the installer on the rx2600 on the vga console. The installer popped up in graphics mode, the disks were found, and then it blew up with an anaconda error. I started the installer again on the vga screen in 'text' mode. That install is progressing as we speak. As you noted, I'm going to have to boot with a different OS, then chroot in to the fedora development root I just installed and install the updated kernel there because I didn't "pollute" our fedora development mirror with my one-off kernel :) I didn't play with the serial console this time except to do some echo commands from the installer "shell" virtual to discover the console was indeed ttyS3. That's just a guess. If you're using the built in zx1_defconfig target then it has been turned off accidently. The actual problem seems to be that the mptspi module is not loaded into the initrd automatically. With an initrd that includes mptspi the kernel boots properly ;-)) ("mkinitrd ..... --preload=mptspi") Unfortunately I couldn't come up with a simple solution for an automatic loading of mptspi (e.g. during standard kernel installation) :-(( Andreas >-i > > >------------------------------------------------------------------------ > >-- >Fedora-ia64-list mailing list >Fedora-ia64-list at redhat.com >https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-ia64-list > > From erikj at sgi.com Fri Aug 19 13:32:06 2005 From: erikj at sgi.com (Erik Jacobson) Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2005 08:32:06 -0500 Subject: [Fedora-ia64-list] Problems with Fedora core 4 on itanium. In the case of the Fedora ia64 development system itself as opposed to using a rhel4 base, all is well. That install to an rx2600 completed without trouble. Recall that I opened up boot.img and plopped in an updated kernel and updated modules.cgz. After the system was installed, I had to install my hacked kernel rpm from a chroot because I didn't uddate my repository/mirror with it. But the rpm installed fine. I re-installed it from the running system itself - all was well. So you don't need to have any scsi drivers static if you don't want to. So, asusming... . you re-build the kernel RPM with those two things turned off . you replace the kernel and modules.cgz on the boot.img with the bits from the fixed up kernel rpm . you install that kernel RPM to your root (via chroot) after install completes (because the installer puts the original kernel on for you) . You don't use x11 graphics mode (anaconda syntax error bug that is fixed according to Jeremy) rx2600 is happy. So as a temporary work-around, turning those two config options of seems to do the trick. If the official builds did that, we wouldn't have these rx2600 issues. Also, I'm now using the serial console on that rx2600. Erik
