I think you're right that a clean install solves the problem, however, 
the fact that you have to clean install indicates that there is a bug in 
the kernel-2.6.spec file.  The kernel seems to depend on something that 
isn't listed in the spec file and that is why you're having problems 
with just doing yum updates.

Try a clean install if you can and please let us know how that works.
