Mr. Rajesh, of NIXI ( www.nixi.in / The National Internet eXchange of India ) will be in Mumbai on Monday, 4th of August. He would be visiting the Directi office in Mumbai and would be very interested to meet LUG members. One of agenda for the meeting is for sponsoring bandwidth for foss projects or foss setups like - local copy of sf.net, debian/fedora/ubuntu/yourfavdistro, indlinux mirrors. NIXI is very interested in going ahead with this idea and have had meetings regarding this with the ilug-del. Directi has expressed interest in sponsoring the hardware for the same cause. Lug members who are interested in meeting up with Mr. Rajesh to discuss the above are very welcome and encouraged to join Devdas and others at Directi office ( Malad ) for lunch or later. JFYI, Mr. Rajesh will be leaving on Monday evening itself. Cheers! Written b. Hands-On. They conducted 'Written' round in the morning (9:45-10:45) and the 'Hands-On' round was from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. Students from different colleges attended the event.Around 30-35 were selected for 'Hands-On' round.Out of these 5 students were for the Linux platform and rest of them were for Windows platform. I reached there at 2:30 and presented the session on Fedora.I got 15 minutes time slot for the presentation.I used following presentation:- http://mspevack.fedorapeople.org/talks/fedora.pdf The presentation was attended by the students who were selected for the 'Hands-On' round. Some of the faculty members of SCIT also attended the presentation. 90% of the attendees heard about Fedora/FOSS and showed good interest in the presentation. I started my presentation by giving some history about Fedora and went over the slides. They were amazed by looking at slide #8 which mentions "320,000 Fedora boxes checked in for updates last week" and have a map. They also appreciated the slide #12, which describes the Fedora logo. I then followed rest of the slides. We then had a small discussion in which we talked about the various means by which we can contribute to the Fedora project. Then I distributed the stickers and batches. Also while judging the 'Hands-On' round students requested me to suggest them some projects.I requested them to look at Fedora site.Specially at :- http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/WishList Three out of four winners was from SICSR.I requested them to contact me later. http://symbiosiscomputers.com/v5/home/index.php Here are some pics of the event:- http://picasaweb.google.com/neependra.khare/TechieKaun08 Regards, Neependra http://techieneeps.blogspot.com/ From debarshi.ray at gmail.com Mon Aug 4 14:02:14 2008 From: debarshi.ray at gmail.com (Debarshi Ray) Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2008 19:32:14 +0530 Subject: Is there a page on the wiki that does ... I reached there on 2nd morning, got registered and started off with attending the welcome session... My talk was scheduled on 3rd at 12 noon so I had some time to interact with people earlier. There were quite a few representations, there were Debian folks, Ubuntu, GSoC guys and many more.. The attending people were mostly those who started using Linux not so long ago, and so there were a mix of non-tech and tech sessions. I started off when queries regarding Fedora, installations and like that began to pour in, I was traveling with my laptop running partial Rawhide, I demoed some features, how Fedoraproject is organized and how to join in... some DVDs were burned and distributed along. Later we also had a mini install fest where a few people were interested in installing Fedora on the Laptops they got with them got the F9 installed, Later in the day i attended some sessions on OpenMoko, Indichix ( http://linuxchix.org ) Ruby... and also distributed Fedora Media. ---- On 3rd I was told that there might be some change in the timings for the schedule but later it came out that my talk was at same time 12 noon. As it happened rain scared off some of the people and there were less then expected audience, I gave an overview of how things at Fedoraproject works, how distros become different because of choices made by the downstream even if the upstream for all the code is same(the Fedora philosophy), and of course how and why to participate. there were lot of questions regarding how to get started, what exactly to do and how Fedora does things, and although there were some problems with connecting to the net I explained the process to join and participate at different Projects. in the end of the session demos were shown for Live CD/USB (many people were interested in Live USB and got one in the end ), and also the Fedora Media distribution. ----- The report is available at http://www.techbugs.org/wiki/MuktIN I'll update the page as soon as i get the snaps for the event from organizers. You probably need some sort of %post magic. You can also use tools like pungi and livecd-creator instead of revisor. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/CustomSpins Rahul From foss.mailinglists at gmail.com Wed Aug 6 13:38:00 2008 From: foss.mailinglists at gmail.com (=?UTF-8?B?IlNhbmthcnNoYW4gKOCmuOCmmeCnjeCmleCmsOCnjeCmt+Cmoyki?=) Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2008 19:08:00 +0530 Subject: error during installation using kickstart file In-Reply-To: <48133.61.17.118.235.1218027230.squirrel@mail.sarai.net> References: <48133.61.17.118.235.1218027230.squirrel@mail.sarai.net> Message-ID: <4899A938.90205@gmail.com> shantanu at sarai.net wrote: so what is way to add kick-start configuration in > boot-menu apart from using revisor to create spin having all the packages. Unpack the initird.img, shoe-horn in your kickstart, put the appropriate option entries and you have your custom kickstart rolled in and ready to install. For example, if passing 'sarai' from the boot menu would require to use your kickstart, that is feasible. -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From foss.mailinglists at gmail.com Thu Aug 7 05:22:11 2008 From: foss.mailinglists at gmail.com (=?UTF-8?B?IlNhbmthcnNoYW4gKOCmuOCmmeCnjeCmleCmsOCnjeCmt+Cmoyki?=) Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2008 10:52:11 +0530 Subject: Event Report Mukt.in In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <489A8683.80701@gmail.com> Siddharth Upmanyu wrote: > I started off when queries regarding Fedora, installations and like > that began to pour in, I was traveling with my laptop running partial > Rawhide, I demoed some features, how Fedoraproject is organized and > how to join in... some DVDs were burned and distributed along. > Later we also had a mini install fest where a few people were > interested in installing Fedora on the Laptops they got with them got > the F9 installed, http://www.tuxmaniac.com/blog/2008/08/05/muktin-a-report/ is another report -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From foss.mailinglists at gmail.com Thu Aug 7 10:39:03 2008 From: foss.mailinglists at gmail.com (=?UTF-8?B?IlNhbmthcnNoYW4gKOCmuOCmmeCnjeCmleCmsOCnjeCmt+Cmoyki?=) Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2008 16:09:03 +0530 Subject: How do I debug what's causing this ? Paul did that for the NIT Calicut meet and by all reports it was a success. Additionally, there are a significant number of developers and contributors to Fedora out of India who would be an excellent resource pool to talk, demonstrate and share insights into Fedora as a project and as a community. Hop on to #fedora-india on any given Sunday at around 1830 hours India time for regular meetings and exchange of notes. -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From debarshi.ray at gmail.com Wed Aug 13 05:00:49 2008 From: debarshi.ray at gmail.com (Debarshi Ray) Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 10:30:49 +0530 Subject: Fwd: [Fwd: Fedora Test Day - Thursday, August 14, 2008 - Encrypted installs and Plymouth] In-Reply-To: <1218561556.4986.47.camel@victoria> References: <1218561556.4986.47.camel@victoria> Message-ID: <3170f42f0808122200jbaaf422ud8eca91f5a7c02a1@mail.gmail.com> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Paul W. This talk was held on Mon, 11 Aug 2008. The topic was -- An Introduction to open source software. There were some 60 odd students who had a general awareness of linux and open source, so it was easy to talk to them. The Master's course at SICSR apparently has a few electives which are designed around OSS and as such the institute itself is very OSS friendly (after all Harshad Gune, one of the elected board members of OSI, is a lecturer at SICSR !). Although the talk was supposed to last for an hour, I overshot it by almost 40mins. (I am lousy at presentations !). The bright side is, we didn't hear any snoring (at least not discernible !). Most of the kids were pretty enthusiastic and we had some animated discussion about the merits of OSS, the business models, the challenges OSS faces and other randomness. The response were quite nice and I am sure I managed to sell OSS and a bit of Fedora to at least some of the more impressionable minds in the audience :) ! Anyways, the slides for the talk (the original .odp as well as the .pdf) are attached to this mail. Hope someone finds them useful (Surprisingly, I did not find much in way of slides or presentations through google for real basic introduction to OSS -- so hope this gets picked up eventually). regards, - steve -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Bonaparte, nothing yet, thanks for volunteering to make that page :) Bonaparte, main idea as we discussed before here is : kushal, I sure can. I hope I won't do a sloppy job volunteering for that To have more workshops than talks Having workshops makes more sense wasn't there a page summing up the earlier plans ? sankarshan, I am bad with wiki links sankarshan, may be mether made one yeah i guess so, grokking my inbox for that btw, all people please read this https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-August/msg00009.html kushal, what is needed to have a Fedora stall? kushal, its already in the planet Bonaparte, Volunteers first, then some demonstration , liveusb buring station http://morpheus.fedorapeople.org/fudcon/fudcon at foss.in was the note that got wikified * sankarshan goes to whack Firefox, open damnit kushal, I am willing to offer my time and whatever resources I can for the event https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FUDCon/FUDConIndia2008 is the page the dates need to be rejigged Bonaparte, cool, so we can take your name for the stall sankarshan, thanks for the links :) kushal, yes, you can and while foss.in or, more precisely FUDCon at foss.in is a major focus, there are other events at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RegionalTeams/India/EventTracker * sankarshan notes that the EventTracker page does not have mukt.in listed although tuxmaniac and techbugs did a fine job So we can see details on the FUDCON page one of the major target is packaging sessions for which we started to have irc based sessions * mj0vy (n=sanujan at 123.239.211.252) has joined #fedora-india then create your own spin sessions :) * empLinux (i=empoweri at 61.1.196.198) has joined #fedora-india Umm.. ok, so if you have read the plans by now, the idea is to have a set of activities as opposed to a 'set of talks' Talks are good, but with the kind of stuff that's happening around Fedora right now, it would be nice to have a constant set of tasks at foss.in Hello friends.. That means that if there are any aspects which you would like to demonstrate, show, talk, have a workshop around - hit fedora-india mailing list with the idea Anyone has anything else to talk about ? Yes I have come across few software that are not in the Fedora repo Would someone like to add them? * mavu_ is now known as mavu Bonaparte, you can start package them, and also put them in the wish list kushal, I wish I had more time to contribute packages to Fedora Wishlist sounds like a good idea ok, so if no other issues we can call the meeting's end 5 4 3 2 1 --MEETING ENDS-- -- Soumya Kanti Chakraborty _______________________________________________ Fedora-india mailing list Fedora-india at redhat.com https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-india -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Since you are a student of Electronics Engineering, I'd be tempted to point you to the Fedora Electronic Lab [1] since you would be able to relate to it pretty quickly. Moving on from there, collect all like-minded group members and think over the following: + what is it that you exactly want to do at this event ? - this is going to help you give shape to the agenda + who would be interested in attending / participating ? - this should allow you to assess the knowledge + how can Fedora work itself into the daily tasks that they do ? Having an event to just introduce participants to Free and Open Source software is going to be a kind of waste of resources. Since you mention that this is more of an awareness event, having something of an installation festival (install fest in general speak) would allow you guide participants in installing and configuring their boxes. Starting from there, one can slowly introduce them to various Fedora sub-projects (and there are plenty) as well this mailing list, how to use the #fedora-india IRC etc [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/FedoraElectronicLab -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From electromech at electromech.info Wed Aug 20 11:37:30 2008 From: electromech at electromech.info (ElectroMech) Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2008 17:07:30 +0530 Subject: [Fwd: Re: Anybody from surat?] In-Reply-To: <48ABFFC6.2050304@gmail.com> References: <48ABF3BE.6030603@redhat.com> <48ABFFC6.2050304@gmail.com> Message-ID: <24233aca0808200437w31b59150jac9b58b3371a22cb@mail.gmail.com> Dear Mr. Vinod, I am fedora-ambassador at Baroda / Ahmedabad. On the premise that you'd be best placed to assess and work out what will strike a chord with students at your college, I'd not go too far to write up an agenda for the event for you. Since less than 5% of your college students use Open Source Software, the first time you meet with a significant population like that, you'd like to demonstrate to them where and how Open Source fits into their daily tasks. There are generally two ways to do this: [i] have a first meeting that is a discussion of the politics and economy of Free and Open Source Software [ii] have a first meeting that is more of a show-n-tell of the actual software themselves with a set of handouts given which your audience can take back and read at leisure You'd be better placed to take a call on what works. You don't really need to be an 'expert' to talk about Open Source Software. If you have been doing bits and pieces of it and can share experiences, your story would resonate more than some outside expert coming in and telling high level stuff. These days a large number of the 'computer' magazines (and especially Linux For You) carry the operating system on the DVDs they ship. If obtaining them is an issue, it would be good to designate yourself and a few others as points of contact for your college and receive the first set of media which you can use to make DVDs for those who request. Access to the DVD is a barrier to usage and adoption, but handled smartly it is a problem that can be resolved. > Initially our team wants to have talks by expert on it . > Making them freely available DVD . Convincing them that OSS is no more > unfriendly. Most of my collegue complains that it is unfriendly. If we > could make an intiation , i am sure it is going to grow faster. Like I stated above, most of the 'unfriendly' bits are generated via perception. Demonstrating that usage of Linux and Open Source Software isn't taking a leap of faith would be a good start. The NIT-Hamirpur folks have done it, as have the Durgapur LUG team. All of them are on this list and on #fedora-india so feel free to adopt the best of the ideas and adapt them to your needs. > I am talking with my friends . I recall that the Linux-Manipur group keeps on organizing regular events. Would it be possible for you to check up with them ? The reason I suggest this is that it would lead to a coupling of forces and provide you with the existing contacts to organize a Fedora 10 release party perhaps. A release party is generally a whole lot of fun since you get to meet new people, help each other resolve niggling issues while installation and configuration and have a great time within the group. If waiting for Fedora 10 release seems too long, you can take up September 20th (Software Freedom Day) and organize a meetup with the agenda of: + talk about Free and Open Source Software + introducing participants to Fedora + handing out Fedora 9 media + talking a bit about how to participate and contribute to Fedora If you require any kind of support please feel free to drop into #fedora-india (on irc.freenode.net) or the fedora-india at redhat.com mailing list (which I put in cc:) -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From sundaram at fedoraproject.org Fri Aug 22 04:41:35 2008 From: sundaram at fedoraproject.org (Rahul Sundaram) Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2008 10:11:35 +0530 Subject: Infy, TCS lock horns with Red Hat over IT patent Message-ID: <48AE437F.5060607@fedoraproject.org> Hi, Forward this and raise more awareness on this issue. Companies like Infosys want software patents along the entire software value chain from source code to software embedded in hardware. However, patenting of software is being opposed strongly by Red Hat India, the Linux based open source software company, along with science forums like the All India Peoples Science Network. Venkatesh Hariharan, who heads Red Hat India?s open source affairs, said the draft patent manual that seeks to introduce patents is not in consonance with the current legal situation. Hariharan pointed out that Section 3(K) of the Patent Act clearly says that a mathematical or business method or computer programmes per se, or algorithms, are not patentable." And I take it as a lesson to work on the media availability bits so that this does not get repeated. I thought I had (wrongly as it turns out) fixed the media availability bits for this particular event. So Susmit, I am sorry that you feel the way you do. As a Fedora Ambassador and a pioneer mirror manager, you don't deserve to feel that way and we intend to take care of that. Susmit is going to represent Fedora at Nagpur at an event called AXIS and we are going to ensure that there is media. Sometime earlier, I'd written to the list about those who would desire to have a set of media which they can use to meet the demands from the users. Barring Kushal and Debarshi no one had responded. So, if you do require a set of media which you intend to use to meet demands locally, please feel free to write to the list and let's get on with making that available. It is a fairly known fact that making media bits available to every request and meeting the demands for bulk shipment of media is somewhat expensive. For that particular reason, we begun by choosing a very small subset of FOSS events in the country. We have been lucky in the fact that other events had sponsors like Nilesh (aka Electromech) who have come forward with support of media. Currently, I have no more F9 media with me. I expect a small run to happen, but that will take at least 20 days. iLUG-Delhi (and especially Gora) are organizing a large number of workshops and they are doing a production run of media again to meet the expected demands. So, what happens if you have an event to attend or organize ? [*] please let the list know about when it is going to happen [*] put an owner to the event [*] put that on the event tracker page [*] if you get media sponsored, please follow it up Suggestions for improvement to the media bits issue are welcome. ~sankarshan -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From a.mani.cms at gmail.com Fri Aug 29 22:07:27 2008 From: a.mani.cms at gmail.com (Mani A) Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2008 03:37:27 +0530 Subject: [fedora-india] For People from Kolkata Message-ID: <78323d480808291507ib9391d7r943f7be261f9ebe0@mail.gmail.com> The Kolkata team for SFD (20th Sept) has a meeting today at 17.30hrs to finalize the programme See http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams/asiaandmiddleeast/india/ILUG-CALINFO for the details. As the day progressed, excitement grew. It was morning when the organisers called us up and asked if they could shift our talk to open stage. They were having space problem :) No, we said. we are no bollywood stars..are we? Around 10:30, we assembled. It was around 11:10 when we reached the college. Upon entering the room we found that there was around ~100 students, mostly from first and second year. Unfortunately, there was a power cut as soon as we entered the room and though they had backup and generators, they were unable to fix it. Time was running and audience was getting bored, so we decided to start without the microphone and projector. First was the talk by Indranil Das Gupta, upon enquiring the audience let us know, that they have heard of Linux in general, they have no detailed idea but now that they have an opportunity want to know specifically what Fedora and Linux was all about. And there was the HOD of the Computer Sc. who wanted to know more about Fedora as they were migrating a whole lab to Fedora. Interestingly, a few students honestly confessed that they were here because the tech fest was on and they had to come to it anyway. ;) In the middle of talk, power came back and everything was back to normal. After that there was my talk[1]. The audience was listening to it carefully, they asked a few questions, and after the talk a few came up to me and asked that they have already installed Fedora and they were having such and such problems. As I didn't have much time, I told them to follow it up with mail. The scenario there is not much encouraging, as people never heard of sourceforge and kernel et. al., but that give us a lot of opportunity to teach them new things. What I found, they have a LUG, had an install fest and then they had no idea how to proceed. So, I talked to them and asked them to make it a in a workshop format. Probably, I shall go back there soon. :) Next, Sayamindu from OLPC spoke, and demoed the sugar desktop, people was entertained. Unfortunately, time ran out and he had to cut his speech short. (He did a 2 hour presentation in ~20 minutes :D.) So that was all about the event. On our return leg, there was rain, so we had to walk a bit, cross a bamboo bridge with toll tax....("bamboo bridge with a toll tax") and went into the china town to have some nice...but that's a different story. :) Thanks. We should be in a position to satisfy requirements in West Bengal soon. I can convince college authorities to start the service, but they wont agree beyond WB. We do ship media from time to time on special requests. I myself do send DVDs on a regular basis. The problem was bulk production. Your college want to do that too? If yes, that's great. But remember, I am talking in terms of 100s, not one or two. BTW are you aware of this[1]? One more thing, please do post your mail with a proper subject line. Having "Fedora-india Digest, Vol 12, Issue 25" does not convey _anything_ what your mail says.
