This time we are @ NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte (60km's from Mangalore) on 7th February. The event aims to: * Create awareness and share information about Free and Open Source Software. * Clarify doubts regarding availability, philosophy, usage related issues, to the extent possible. * Explore GNU/Linux and its tools with education as an aspect. * Distribute GNU/Linux distributions for people to try it out. (Free CDs, no cost involved) * Help people install GNU/Linux on their machines (laptops @ venue). * Help people configure and optimize GNU/Linux installations for using Kannada. * Answer queries pertaining to usage of Kannada on the GNU/Linux platform, to the best of our knowledge. * Help people to avoid proprietary lock-ins. GNU/Linux Habba was started in Bangalore with its first edition in April 2008 by volunteers of Sampada Community (http://sampada.net) to not only spread the word about free software, but also to introduce GNU/Linux to the non-technical computer users. The first edition organized at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore received tremendous response with more than 377 registrations running up to the event. Many participants installed GNU/Linux on their Desktops/Laptops and learnt how to use Kannada on it. From NGOs to Public sector officials keen to learn more about GNU/Linux - many people participated in the event. Following the success of the first edition, the group of volunteers behind the event decided to extend the festival to other cities in Karnataka, starting with Mysore. The second edition of GNU/Linux Habba (http://habba.in) was held on 21st September, 2008 at Physics Department, University of Mysore. Following the overwhelming response to the event, we have decided to enable users to work with Gnu/Linux at Mangalore. (Disadvantage you might need to use two projectors one to see the face of the presenter + the other one to run the slides or the demo , but I must say Debayan managed it excellently wellwith one projector) 2. I became interested in video conference and tried googling some tools if they are already available. I could find many many tools. http://www.palbee.com is one of them. It gives you a white board for you to draw things and show also. But for some reason - may be missing flash plugins, it works on Ubuntu Firefox and not on Fedora's (may be I didnt install some extra flash plugin) 3. try to google and ask around others what they use when they have video talks. Some basic setup; 1. Run trial run with the speaker before hand. You migh tend up in a chaos otherwise. Also you will realise several things that You forgot or thought it to be implicit. 2. Make sure everything, including mic from the audience side works. It will be great to have a wireless mic in place so that some one can go around, for questions from the audience. Help in being more interactive. 3. You dont need a very very good Internet connection. A decent 256 - 512 Kbps connection is sufficient IMO. (I have skyped on such connections, and the results are not bad at all) 4. Getting a good webcam on both sides will help enhance the experience. Cheapo webcams can degrade the experience a lot. I am now motivated to get a better webcam :P 5. Even after all these precautions, you cant help if internet goes "b0rk" 5 minutes before the presentation. Really it might sound funny. But it happened :d Have fun! I think its a nice idea to take internet to the next level of personalisation that to keep it confined to mailing lists and IRC. <-- Quote Stolen from a good friend Praveen Regards, Aanjhan From aanjhan at gmail.com Thu Feb 5 10:31:26 2009 From: aanjhan at gmail.com (Aanjhan R) Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2009 11:31:26 +0100 Subject: FEL Remote Workshops [was Re: [Fedora-India] Request for speaker] Message-ID: On Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 9:00 AM, Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay wrote: > On Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 1:25 PM, Debayan Banerjee wrote: >> Its actually fairly easy to set-up. > > That makes it 'portable' > >> btw our professors in ECE dept are asking us to the same workshop again! > > Cajole Aanjhan is what can be said :) Hehe. [most of the first year students have not bought a system yet...expecting another few installations when they do so.] Media Distributed : 60 (appx.) [Fedora 10 DVDs and Fedora 10 Live-CD KDE were distributed] Feedback : A huge success, demands of conducting another one. [working on it already...sometime in the middle of Feb. probably ...thinking of introducing GCC this time.] The event went out as planned. Since the audience had no prior knowledge about Linux or FOSS, we began with talking on FOSS and Linux. The '4F' of FOSS was explained and other advantages were discussed. Also, we emphasized on the difference between the EULA and GPL license agreements, also emphasized that Linux is not affected by viruses, and is highly secured. We then spoke about the Linux filesystem and explained that it does not require any defragmention. The audience were really amazed at and impressed by the advantages of Linux over Windows. Then, we informed them about the different distributions of Linux available and made them realise their "Freedom of Choice" and that there can be a day without "Microsoft Windows". Gradually, we moved forward and began installation. The distro to be installed was Fedora 10. Step-by-Step installation procedure was being shown via a projector(we used Virtual Box to virtually install on a system and connected t to the projector). Simultaneously, 10 DGPLUG volunteers who were guiding the students with the installation of Fedora 10 in their computer systems. We again resumed our discussion when the package installation had started. Then we emphasized on The Linux Users' Group of Durgapur, DGPLUG and its activities in increasing Linux awareness in the area. We discussed about the ongoing Bijra Project (bijra.dgplug.org), showed the audience some videos on OLPC, Truth Happens, History of Fedora. After the installation was done, we did a session on vim and then on gcc. Then we showed the Kdeedu tools, the Gnome and KDE Desktop environments, the Compiz effects ( it really captivated the audience who had by then become the spectators), the Sound and Video applications, Pidgin, XChat and others. We finally wrapped everything up with the "I'm Fedora" video. Finally, at around 4:30 p.m. everyone went back satisfied. So I am eagerly want to ask that whether a > server operating system really needs to up within 20 second? A system should start as fast as possible and yes, that includes a server. If you have been administrating server systems, you don't really want to waste time waiting for it to boot instead of doing something useful. Besides, Fedora is used more on the desktops and laptops compared to servers. In fact a server system is configured manually to specifically run services or not to. As a server administrator you would want it to boot as fast as possible since the specific services that you want are either turned off or turned on by you. You would not really want to wait for foo bar services running on a server and waiting for it just to turn it off. So if you say that for a server a fast boot up time is not required I think you are missing the mark. On the other hand, servers are so infrequently rebooted that a 20 sec boot or a 60 sec boot does not make much difference. Cool, that's nice. > ->The feature is it should download files from given URL at given time > ->IT SHOULD WORK WHEN SYSTEM IS IN SLEEPING MODE. Before going any further, I should mention that typing out in ALL CAPS when writing a mail, is considered as equivalent to shouting. So, unless you really do want to appear angry, you should /not/ use ALL CAPS. Now, about your project. Firstly, you need to be more specific about your requirements. For example what exactly do you mean by ... > ->The feature is it should download files from given URL at given time Does that mean, you should be able to schedule downloads ? So, is the download manager, something to just manage and schedule downloads and some other external program would actually do the download ? Also, about this requirement ... > ->IT SHOULD WORK WHEN SYSTEM IS IN SLEEPING MODE. What do you mean by "sleeping mode", if you mean the 'sleep' or 'standby' mode as windows calls it (or the suspend mode as linux calls it), AFAIK, doing this is not possible (at least not in the traditional sense of 'sleep'), because, 'sleeping' is a device specific thing. So, in standby, all devices, incuding the hard disk, network card and cpu power down (ie: the CPU stops executing instructions, the hard disk spins down and the network card stops raising interrupts). Before expalining more, there is something else you should know ... > > To this i preffered APMSLEEP AMP is an old implimentation of power management. AMP has been replaced by ACPI. Learn more about APCI and sleep modes (ie: S-states) beginning here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_mode > what i can do for this ? > My system supports acpi > IS any support in fedora 10 or other versions Since ACPI replaces the old APM implementation and your system presumably supports ACPI, you shouldn't need to do anything. To test if suspend and resume works well on your system, from the panel, go to 'System-> Shutdown -> Suspend' and check whether that works (or from the command line: pm-suspend). Switching the system back on should return you to the desktop with all the state preserved. So, to summarize: a. understand what are the limitations b. define your problem more clearly regards, - steve From sundaram at fedoraproject.org Thu Feb 12 12:36:59 2009 From: sundaram at fedoraproject.org (Rahul Sundaram) Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2009 18:06:59 +0530 Subject: [fedora-india] fossconf 2009 In-Reply-To: References: <4993D2C9.4070507@fedoraproject.org> Message-ID: <499417EB.7000400@fedoraproject.org> Sri Ramadoss M wrote: > On Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 1:12 PM, Rahul Sundaram > wrote: >> Hi >> >> http://www.fossconf.in/ >> >> FossConf09 will be held at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, >> TamilNadu from 27th February to 1st March 2009. The original wordnet BZ pointed out in this thread was for F10 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=473583 which, unfortunately, is /still/ pending a review (and sponsorship)[1]. However, you may use the source rpm in the BZ[2] and rebuild it. As for xpaint, seems like the package on sourceforge isn't been maintained actively (last update Aug 2005). Is there a reason why you do not want to use any of the many alternative paint packages ? I could try and package it for you, but in case you are really interested in getting that package and you are inclined, I'd recommend having a go at creating and submitting the rpm yourself ! After all FOSS is all about scratching your own itch. regards, - steve [1] Could someone /please/ review this and sponsor me ? I'd be more motivated to package some of the other small apps i use which aren't in fedora if i have access to the build and hosting system. The language is listed in the System->Administration->Language, but it's not listed in the login screen. Most of the other Indic languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, etc.. are included. You are a person, friendly and approachable. Fedora is big and scary, but you are going to help make sure that *one person* finds their way through all the confusion into the place where they can contribute. (2) You are the glue. You help connect different people in different parts of the Project, because you are always dealing with people whose interests are different. You should be eager and happy to work with other parts of Fedora to solve problems. (3) People are the key. Everything that we do -- events, budgets, swag, membership verifications, blogging -- it's all done as an attempt to make personal connections with folks who either want to use or contribute to Fedora. Places where Ambassadors get together are one of the few times that Fedora contributors have an opportunity to meet face to face (other than FUDCons and FADs). (4) You are the expert in your region. You understand the culture, the needs, and the best ways to communicate about Fedora and FOSS in your region. FAmSCo and other "leaders" in Fedora *work for you*, and need to listen to what you are saying makes sense. We can't ignore the global picture, but we need to be flexible in adapting to local needs. These are things I have been thinking about while reading ambassadors-list recently. --Max -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From foss.mailinglists at gmail.com Wed Feb 18 04:42:23 2009 From: foss.mailinglists at gmail.com (Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay) Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2009 10:12:23 +0530 Subject: [fedora-india] [Bookmark] The four foundations are the core values of the Fedora community. I'm still trying to get better bandwidth at the venue for the remote remote presentation. (The college had made bandwidth arrangements for our tech-fest ). I am trying to cajole the Department HOD into getting it done for us. It is uphill work, since authorities are reluctant to make any efforts for *any thing* that has no monetary benefit (sadly). I will know for certain in a few days if it is possible or not. Also, is it possible for any of you (the Fedora-India seniors) to mail me requesting the college to provide this kind of infrastructure for the conference on behalf of the "Fedora India Community"? As a community we should not be getting into areas which are the domain of college administrations and, IT infrastructure would be one of them. To wrap this up, if IT infrastructure or bandwidth is an issue, a talk over IRC is a good way of doing this. -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From aanjhan at gmail.com Wed Feb 18 10:02:49 2009 From: aanjhan at gmail.com (Aanjhan R) Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2009 11:02:49 +0100 Subject: [Fedora-India] Request for speaker In-Reply-To: <1234950348.4474.15.camel@localhost.localdomain> References: <1233664439.3735.37.camel@localhost.localdomain> <49888BCC.4030609@fedoraproject.org> <1233687413.3735.49.camel@localhost.localdomain> <35586fc00902041934h52f58c8ap938a79d542556af9@mail.gmail.com> <1233809120.21588.10.camel@localhost.localdomain> <1233831545.21588.14.camel@localhost.localdomain> <499BD677.2080401@fedoraproject.org> <1234950348.4474.15.camel@localhost.localdomain> Message-ID: On Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 10:45 AM, Ankur Sinha wrote: > Also, is it possible for any of you (the Fedora-India seniors) to mail > me requesting the college to provide this kind of infrastructure for the > conference on behalf of the "Fedora India Community"? Well, Since I have been in such a college scenario I can understand your request completely. But to increase bandwidth and provide infrastructure on "special" occasions ? Now this is strange and I wouldn't want to go into further details. The way the "community" works is not by poking its nose into College Administration stuff. You are also part of this community and you _must_ be able to convince the college authorities to give a "GO" signal. If things dont work out fine, the best option would be to find a speaker within college (I remember quite a few people were successful at Manipal with this a couple of years back when I was there) or as Rahul has already mentioned, IRC conversation is the way. Just get everybody into IRC channel #fedora-india and getting rolling. People have done this with pretty good success rate before. Engineering Collg. Install Fest and FAD Message-ID: This is regarding the install fest and FAD at KGEC. The organizers have arranged everything that we wanted. They have changed the venue to their LAB where we will get 2 MBps internet connectivity. They have also managed to get funds in just 2 days and are arranging for food packets for everybody including the participants. There is no participation fee for the event. Participation well over 100 is expected. The FAD starts at 11:00 a.m and continues till the evening with a break in between. The agenda is upon us to decide. Its an install fest cum FAD. So will definitely need all the help we can get to man the booth in the morning and help out in the workshops as well. Bring whatever slides you can. Will decide what exactly to do. The agenda I was thinking is 1> Introduction to Linux and Fedora (Arindam's slides) 2> Installation(using DVD) and configuration( probably using a local mirror) 3> Talk on Myths about Linux busted with Fedora (Subodip's slideshow) 4> A demo and workshop on the various softwares and utilities. 5> Talk on how to contribute to FOSS and how to join Fedora ( Possibly using Satya's slides) The speakers are yet to be decided. All I know is that Debayan, Ratnadeep, Kishan Goyal and me along with Indranil da are attending the event. Don't know about Dipanjan or Sarbartha. hey haven't confirmed yet. I want Indranil da to say something. Will talk to him tomorrow. Suggest anything, any change or any addition, you want. Remember, the agenda for the event isn't final yet. Anyone who wants to speak on anything else please let me know. I will be needing 100 DVDs. Anyone who has it please supply. Debayan is bringing some, maybe 50. It can be done by anyone who reads up the relevant wiki pages. Check if you can have a LiveUSB station and get participants to bring in their own USB sticks and thus get a LiveUSB of Fedora 10. > The speakers are yet to be decided. I understand your excitement, but it is better to keep your cool. :) Once you have been promised some resources, it is inappropriate to send another call for help on the same thing. Anyway, can I have your mobile number offlist? Can you pick the DVDs today evening or tomorrow morning from Jadavpur? I have my mobile no on my page. Well the resources have already been allocated by Susmit and Debayan has some. Will manage with that. If we need more we will make copies at KGEC. The blank DVDs will be provided by them. I then installed F10 in VBox, and was trying to install the packages to see their dependencies, then download them manually. What a time! But, now what I did was yum resolvedep Then either install them keeping the yum cache on or, yumdownloader I also added the the Packages from the F10 Install DVD, so that there is no Dependency failure if one does an installation selecting the default packages only. Also this time I included the KDE 4.2 update, and it is better to do a yum groupinstall kde-desktop for that. To enable group install in your repo, copy the comps-f10.xml file from /var/cache/yum/updates/comps-f10.xml to your repo folder, then create repo in the following way------- createrepo -g comps-f10.xml /path/to/repo_folder/ Now all you need is a .repo file in /etc/yum.repos.d/ which has the information on the baseurl for offline installation. The present size of my repo is approx. 3.6 GB. It works nicely. The repo can be on any media ( from internal disks to USB flash drives and DVDs). You can mount the repo folder to /var/ftp/pub/ in case you are using an FTP server. You can have a kickstart which asks the user to manually partition but has a pre-defined set of packages to be installed. As regards why a kickstart method is required to be demonstrated - it allows you to control the installation environment and yet provides the flexibility of demonstrating various installation method. As is the norm, please point the participants at the fest to go through especially the parts related to . The last document comes in handy when they go out and help their friends install Fedora. If you expect a bunch of potential developers etc to be landing up, also take a little time out talk about how to set up a developer box on Fedora, what to select etc. And, if anyone wants to join the Fedora Project, -- http://www.gutenberg.net - Fine literature digitally re-published http://www.plos.org - Public Library of Science http://www.creativecommons.org - Flexible copyright for creative work From sanjay.ankur at gmail.com Fri Feb 20 15:55:26 2009 From: sanjay.ankur at gmail.com (Ankur Sinha) Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2009 21:25:26 +0530 Subject: [fedora-india] Finally prepared the offline repo for the Install Fest at Kalyani Govt. Get all the rpms ( those stored in your /var/cache/yum/) and check if any dependencies are missing. If so, get all the dependencies. You can do this by : $yum resolvedep Also, to avoid dependency failure, if all the Fedora Packages in the Install DVD are not installed, I copied all the RPMs in the Packages folder of the Installation DVD in the tartget RPM folder. Now you can create a repo in this way: $createrepo But this will not allow you to do a "groupinstall: from the repo. "yum groupinstall" can be enabled in the following way: $createrepo -g comps##.xml can be found in /var/cache/yum/updates/. Now you need to create a .repo file in /etc/yum.repos.d/. The following is my fedora-local.repo : [fedora-local] name=Fedora 10 - i386 - Local failovermethod=priority #baseurl=ftp://laptop.org/pub/fedora/releases/9/Everything/i386/os/ #************The following line is the URL of the Repo folder************** baseurl=ftp://127.0.0.1/pub/ enabled=0 gpgcheck=0 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-i386 Since I setup an ftp server, and then mounted the repo folder in /var/ftp/pub/ ( $mount --bind /var/ftp/pub/), I used my LO IP 127.0.0.1. To install from the offline repo, you can always do $yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=fedora-local I hope this will be of help. The talk was spread over 3 days with the first being a general evangelical talk being given by Pradeepto on FOSS. The tech talk the following day was more KDE-centric and technical in nature and intended to get the students into the loop. The last talk delivered by Susmit on the 3rd day was on Fedora in particular, to get to know about the fedora system. The first talk delivered by Pradeepto dwelt on what is the real meaning of "free." There after he told us about where the student community comes into the picture and by suggesting real examples he told us why it is NOT difficult to join in. Then he told us a bit about GSOC- what it was, what were its aim, etc? The talk the following day was intended to be more programmer-centric and as such Pradeepto gave us examples in KDE programming(or as such Qt programming for that matter). We were also told about how "bindings" can allow us to use our favorite language of choice for performing stuff intended to be done by some other language. After the formal talk was over students had an informal discussion with him about what are the "in" things, what now, what languages to learn, etc. On the 3rd day as we had a power outage Susmit couldn't give a formal presentation. But not to worry he quickly switched over to the Q&A mode. Students brimming with questions asked their doubts about fedora and how we too could have a mirror. There after when the power did come back- Susmit told us about what packages are available in fedora and how and why fedora is different from other Linux distros. He told us about how fedora encourages upstream development and why fedora is more developer friendly. Finally it was topped off with Fedora DVDs to the interested candidates and flurry of exchanging contacts and making friends :) And thus came to an end an eventful 3 days in BHU, Varanasi. regards R Dhushyanth From shekhawat.anirudh at gmail.com Wed Feb 25 11:24:39 2009 From: shekhawat.anirudh at gmail.com (anirudh shekhawat) Date: Wed, 25 Feb 2009 16:54:39 +0530 Subject: [fedora-india] display problems even with "acpi=off nomodeset pci=msi" Message-ID: <6145529c0902250324k24e42e5eq561d49346d196770@mail.gmail.com> I installed fedora 10 in text mode but the first reboot couldnt log me in ,i.e. the system did not comeup and the system would only work with these boot options "acpi=off nomodeset pci=msi" and none of them could be excluded and once the system is up and running in cli mode, and when did "startx", the display which came up was slow i.e. the reaction of the mouse pointer and the opening and closing of applications window was quite slow. But also that the display worked fine at times, but this was just at sometimes. Tried it today on a server with VT support enabled using the "virt-install" (as I prefer console based tools) tool on Fedora 10 (64 bit) host. Tried the instructions as available at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Virtualization_Quick_Start. Tried to install a RHEL3 (32 bit) guest. Did not work out, the attempt failed with the script existing with errors as below :. It would be great to have a similar or better participation this time around as well. Susmit, Did you have time to look at this? Since you are already dropping mails to ambassadors, you might want to invite them to this list and ask them to introduce themselves. I suspect many of them are still not aware that this list exists or not subscribed to it yet. Is there a equivalent to RHN errata for RHEL? The answer is a bit more detailed and depending on what you want, there are multiple avenues for update information. Note that unlike many other distributions, Fedora updates are not limited to just security and bug fixes and often contain new major upstream releases as well. RSS feeds from http://fedoraproject.org/infofeed/ Bodhi, Fedora updates system https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates Fedora package announce list. We use mailman filters so that you can choose to filter out which releases you get update information for http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-package-announce More details at http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2006-May/msg00001.html Also, yum has a number of nifty plugins. One of them called yum-changelog is useful for listing the RPM changelog information before or after an update for review. Another plugin that is useful for getting just the security updates. Refer the following (articles refer to RHEL but this works on Fedora as well) http://magazine.redhat.com/2008/01/16/tips-and-tricks-yum-security/ Hope that helps. Rahul
