Hi, Welcome to the list. However, you are not yet an ambassador. You will be an ambassdor when you camplete the tasks and clear the interview. :) Secondly, posting in caps means shouting, don't do it. Read the mailing list guideline which I have already sent. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines Thanks. -- Regards, Susmit. ============================================= ssh 0x86DD170A http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/user:susmit ============================================= Sent from Calcutta, WB, India -- Regards, Susmit. ============================================= ssh 0x86DD170A http://www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/user:susmit ============================================= Sent from Calcutta, WB, India Hi Ankur, Welcome to the wonderful world of the Fedora Project. Thanks for your time and energy that you are dedicating to Fedora. I shall be closely mentoring you for the next one month so that your entry into the project is smooth. It is not difficult, and given the right enthusiasm and hard work, you will be in the 'ambassadors' group. But remember, you need to work *hard*. Also, you will have to pass an IRC interview and accomplish a small task (other than evangelism) before you are granted entry. Please be prepared to hear "no" if you are not considered to be ready. If you should not pass, you will have the chance to apply again. Also, you must work with your local Ambassadors, whom I shall invite to the IRC interview and ask for their feedback before approving you. It is your duty to contact them and find out how you can contribute locally. You shall find them here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/MembershipService/Verification. Your one month period starts from today. Any communication regarding this one month mentoring period should be made by replying to this email, keeping the Cc: list intact. You cannot ask for more time after the end of this period, you must apply again. Right now, your primary tasks are as follows. All steps are mandatory. All questions are welcome, but please don't ask for others to do your work for you, such as saying, "I can't find this page, where is it?" Most of the things below are from the wiki. Week 1: 1. Be familiar with principles and philosophy of FOSS. A few suggested readings are: 1. http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/philosophy.html . Specifically "About Free Software" part. 2. http://catb.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/ 2. Please let me know your Fedora Account name, create your home page *properly* (clue: there is a home page template somewhere in the wiki), and let me know the link. 3. Find out and join your regional mailing list. For example, if you are from India, join the fedora-india mailing list. Week 2: 4. Get a blog and get it aggregated into planet fedora. (This is very important. Find out how you can do it.) 5. You should be *very* comfortable with the mailing list etiquette[3] and using IRC. 6. Study the Fedora Project wiki[1] properly. You should be comfortable with the wiki. Especially study this[2] page and all the links from it. 7. As an Ambassador, you should be comfortable with how to organise an event, what are the messages of Fedora, and how to behave as an Ambassador. Week 3 & 4: 8. Find out any other sub-project (fedora-doc, fedora-art etc.) where you want to contribute. If you are from India, this is *mandatory*. 9. Find out at least two specific things where you think Fedora can improve and suggest improvements. (This is also very important.) 10. As an Ambassador, you will work with others and will occasionally find bugs. You need to report them. Read about how to file a bug and open a bugzilla account.[4] 11. The above task list is not complete. You may be assigned more tasks. 12. Once you are done with the steps and feel comfortable, you will have to clear an IRC interview. 13. If you have any question, please ask. Thanks. Enjoy. Myself and Mr. Ramadoss from NRCFOSS, Fedora Ambassasador conducted the event. Ramadoss introduced the students to the philosophy of free software and Stallman?s crusade against the imposition of proprietary software. He delved into the GNU philosophy and gave several examples to emphasise the concept. He then talked about the open source community following which we demonstrated a Fedora 11 installation. We got a volunteer to install the operating system. The audience had several doubts about the install process, and we resolved them. For the fun of it we tried to install in Hindi once, but reverted to English finally. After the demonstration, I spoke about the software available in Fedora, and then about a few basic command line utilities. It was followed by a talk on bash scripting. The day ended with our answering a few questions from the students about open source, real IT revolution and choice of software. Over a hundred students participated in the event and were introduced to the free software movement. A release slogan is a short call-to-action that fits the artwork theme from Design, https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F12_release_slogan#Themes. (F11's slogan was "Reign," F10's was "Fire it up!") The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 9/15 at 20:00 UTC, which is our next Marketing meeting (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_meetings). We'll be discussing submissions there, and then Mo Duffy will take that input and select the final slogan on behalf of the Design team on Thursday 9/17. This campaign was called Jagriti, as it looked as an apt name for it since, its an awakening from the darkness which has for so long prevailed that, is not confused by light by all the mortals who don?t have a mind of their own :D And at last i thought it was time to take an initiative to start the freedom movement afresh where it had lots its steam. So now it was the time. This [1] is exactly what i have started along with another lug-jaipur (linux users group jaipur) member mukul gupta, also skit-osum [3] leader of my college, which also is an enthralling community of over 500 members which also makes it one of the seven such communities the world over. The project is well supported by our IT-Head of the department who is willing to do anything for it, he is even willing to change the whole infrastructure of few labs who have computers from the times of Adam, and would get some new sleek machines and you can imagine the joy of installing fedora 11 on them. That is just a notice which had to be circulated around the college to inform all the teachers and students what is going around. According to it, all the programming work will be done on linux and we are to assist the concerned teachers to implement it in their respective labs. This becomes so necessary pertaining to the wide spread use of turbo C which sensible people all around the world have even forgotten about but for some god knows what reason it happens to be the most popular IDE in india for c/c++. Though when we were planning our shift to fedora a guy also suggested to use another IDE for windows instead and i remember giving him some strange sort of looks and he knew what was coming and he shut up, but later i also explained him a few things and made that strange thought to go away. Everything seems to have been falling into place and we are about to start with our labs from monday, assisting teachers to write their c/c++ code on fedora. The project is witnessing a mild start but the whole picture will get clear by end of the next week and how have we performed in the coming week, and there-after we would be too glad to involve lugj and the indian foss community and take the initiative to a whole new level. keeping fingers crossed :D [1] http://bit.ly/eHM2L [2] http://lugj.in [3] http://studentdevelopers.ning.com/group/skitosum regards Adip -- My web home http://acedip.in Linux Users Group Jaipur http://lugj.in -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GCS/FA/L/MU/P/S !d s:- a-- C UL P++ L+++ E- W++ N++ o K-- w--- O- M- V PS PE Y PGP t 5 X R tv b DI D G e h+ r- y++ ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today, Sunday, September 13, 2009, I deployed Fedora 11, and Fedora 11 offline repository at Devnar Foundation for the Blind, Mayurmarg, Begumpet, Hyderabad, India. They have been using a proprietary software on a proprietary system, and wanted to explore better alternatives in this regard. I was given a 256 MB RAM system, with 40 GB hard-disk. This system did not have Internet connectivity. The offline repository really helped. Most of the systems are donated by companies for the school to use. The school follows the Andhra Pradesh State syllabus, and this year they have introduced Intermediate (after Board X). They write their exams on slate or on Braille paper (which I believe, is very expensive). Some students stay in the school hostel, while others' are day scholars. They do have one MountBatten Brailler [1] (costing around 1,00,000 INR) which can produce output to a computer or a printer. It also spells out the input. I didn't have time to test it with Fedora (serial, parallel ports). A junior teacher, Miss. Shashi, did try out Orca [2] with the Gnome shortcut keys, listening to Orcas' audio output. She was able to navigate through the Gnome menus, and use Openoffice.org Writer. They did want spoken American English, which is default in Gnome. It will be good to have those Orca audio recorded in Telugu or other regional languages in India. There were some very interesting questions like: * Orca loads only after logging in -- which spells out menus, the frame window that is selected, keys pressed etc. So, grub which loads prior to all these doesn't announce the choice of kernel. So, how does one choose the right kernel? * A sound can be played after gdm loads? Otherwise, they wouldn't know if the system booted to gdm or not. If there are multiple user accounts, some application need to spell-out the login names? * By default there is no shutdown sound in Fedora 11? How to set one? * Some applications pop-up menus didn't support tab feature, so one had to remember to use shortcuts like Alt+S to Save, or Alt+C to Cancel. I shall check these requests with the Orca project team, and any other queries that they might have as follow-ups. I would like to thank Padma Shri Dr. A. Saibaba Goud for giving me an opportunity to deploy the solution at their school. Thanks to Rakesh ("arky") Ambati for introducing me to them, who also works for 'Braille Without Borders' [3]. Eric Ofori from South Africa will be following it up with support for the school staff (about 40 in number). If anyone in Hyderabad is interested in helping them, please do contact me offline. With all due respect to the physically challenged, I did not take any photos. The dhvani project(http://dhvani.sourceforge.net) attempts to fill this gap. But the project is going in very slow since there is no developers for many languages. It can work with Orca too. No, do it the other way. First get people interested and then go for infrastructure setup. Don't worry, the second one isn't much of a problem. This Saturday, September 19, 2009 is Software Freedom Day. On this day there are couple of activities planned from my side in Hyderabad. 1. Visit to Devnar Foundation for the Blind. This is a follow-up session, to help them with Orca, and maybe install more systems in the labs. Their address is: Devnar School for the Blind 1-10-122 to 125, Mayurmarg, Begumpet, Hyderabad 500016 Andhra Pradesh, India Phone: +91-40-27767931, 66175696 Please don't follow Google maps, as it is incorrectly marked. Mayurimarg is the road next to Mayuri distributors in Begumpet. * Please try Orca on your system, before you come to the venue. You could bring print-outs of Orca short-cuts, Gnome short-cuts, which we could translate into Braille for them. * We can also add similar short-cuts from their existing proprietary system to Orca. 2. Post lunch, around 1430 IST, we would go to Department of Astronomy, Osmania University to deploy Fedora offline repository. If you are interested to participate in either, please contact me offline (not to the lists!), so we can coordinate the same. You can also get the Fedora offline repository (Fedora 11 - 29 GB, Fedora 10 - 24 GB), and Fedora 11 DVDs, from me during this time. The first years have just been given their laptops, and, keeping that in mind, an install fest has been planned. Distro of choice is Fedora (second year in a row ;) ) The install fest is scheduled for the 6-8 of October. Taking stats from the install fest at the OpenWeek[1] last sem, we set approx 120 laptops free with Fedora. For the OpenWeek, we had burnt our own media (on our laptops). This caused wastage etc. (since manipal does not have a place that burns mass media, and laptop dvd burners tend to fail more than succeed).Hence, I'd like to request media for the Install fest. Another issue we need help on: "How to make a local repo available to 120 ppl during the install fest." The situation is this: we dont have hardware(routers etc.), the intranet, uhm, *sucks*, and giving them repos burnt onto a dvd again causes lots of wastage. What we do have : All the lug members who'll help will have laptops. What would be the best way of providing the local repos? We also had the same concerns. There is no need to provide repo to 120 people all at once since install DVD has *enough* packages. You can show them how to install on one laptop and then they can do it themselves later on. Supporting 120 people might result in a crashed server. Best way of providing repo : just get a computer from your college authorities (don't use a laptop) and create a local repo there. We have done the same here and it is working just fine. To get DVDs from fedora, you have to file a ticket on fedorahosted. I am not sure of the exact link. As I already mentioned, the college intranet's too bad to even try installing the multimedia etc over it. These packages are the ones that fedora doesnt include in the dvd. (the not open source stuff). They happen to be sort of necessary to show newbies that linux has what windows does, only much better. Also, since they've been given windows vista and 7, the partitioning requires "special skills". We really can't expect them to do it all on their own. We walk them through the entire process. Takes a while, but it gets everyone happily working on a fedora system. > Best way of providing repo : just get a computer from your college > authorities (don't use a laptop) and create a local repo there. Virtual machine 'BOSS 2' has terminated unexpectedly during startup. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. -- Regards, S.Malathi. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We didn't made much publicity about such happening in the college, only few notice & mouth publicity was done . The turnout was superb nearing to 60 ( & the hall was packed ), we certainly didn't expect this much on govt. holiday .We were overawed ( surprised for the 2nd time ) . Thanks to Electronics Deptt., we got the Resonance hall & thanks to the working A.C.s , we got no unwanted environmental problems . The LUG at RTUKota inaugural event began at 10:20 a.m. with the gracious presence of Dr. S.C.Jain Sir ,HOD,Computer Deptt.; R.K.Bayal Sir, Professor,Computer Deptt; Dinesh Jain Sir,Professor,Computer Deptt . I started the presentation with LUG at RTUKota formation objectives & the plans ahead . The HOD Sir then inaugurated the LUG at RTUKota group & explained the history of Open-Source software & Linus Torvalds and gave other historical & futuristic importance of Open-Source . Then Bayal Sir, who mentor us for LUG at RTUKota formation, presented the difference between the Open-Source & Closed-Source software & benefits of former above latter .He presented the beautiful & astonishing comparison of linux v/s windows, which explains how can we save 5 Lac rupees ( approx 11K $ ) straight by using Open-source softwares . After that beautiful comparison, I made an interactive presentation ( i am not glorifying myself, here ) over why should we switch over from Windows to Linux . The misconceptions regarding Linux were removed . The benefits of using Linux over Windows ,the large range of distros available to choose & discussed the most downloaded distros Ubuntu & Fedora . After that,Jain Sir gave vote-of-thanks to the students & assured them of their support for LUG at RTUKota & encouraged us to do regular meetings . Then Gaurav Agarwal , gave beautiful presentation on how to install Fedora and covered the various options available such as 1.WUBi ( Ubuntu inside Windows ) 2. Installing using LiveCD, 3. Installing on VirtualBox 4. Hard-disk Installation He focussed on the most difficult part ( as we got to know by surverying the students ;for detailed report regarding the survey report ,you can contact us personally ) of installation i.e. partitioning. He explained every tiny part involved in installing Fedora . *Install Fest ----> * The students were already asked to come with laptops, who like to install linux. We presented them with wide range of distros available & their features in split-second way. We've volunteers who helped the students to install linux. Fedora, LinuxMint & Ubuntu suited the students requirements and installed subsequently with Gaurav showing them the installation procedure . Although, only 10 students came with laptops it was an encouraging sign that they showed such an interest in the very first meeting . The install fest continued for approx. 35 minutes. *The Surprise Package ---> * The multibootable dvd was made ( no software was used, only linux commands were used in the making ) by me which contains 10 linux and most importantly PuppyLinux. I ( & few other students too ) started the stopwatch & booted the puppylinux. In 1 min 20 seconds the puppylinux welcome screen was displayed with all the partitions shown. Then i gave them insight into puppy ,that you can play songs.watch videos, connect to network,text-processing,play games & do everything without installing onto hard disk. The students were overwhelmed & multibootable dvd was distributed to those who came with blank dvds. *Media Distribution----> * The acknowledgements are due to following guys who helped us in arranging medias for distribution --> 1. Sanjay Agarwal ( lug-jhalawar )--> He provided us with SFD kit consisting of Ubuntu LiveCDs,SFD t-shirt & few SFD balloons. 2. Anirudh Singh Shekhawat ( lug-jaipur ) --> He provided us with Fedora 11 dvds . Then medias were distributed to the students . The event got completed at 12:30 p.m. The vote-of-thanks was given to students for huge turnout. I believe, this report will give a quick account of the event for those who missed it.They can download the presentations from the uploading section . They need not to be depressed since it is the beginning which is never going to end . The *LUG at RTUKota* inaugural event crossed our expectations,we enjoyed it most . We assure them that we'll continue to organize lug meetings every fortnight/month. Great & encouraging feedbacks were given. We expect that the formation of LUG at RTUKota will help promote the linux and cater to the needs of linux lovers, in an otherwise educational city of Kota ( India-->Rajasthan ). We acknowledge the efforts of the following volunteers who help us in organizing the event --> Sulabh Vijayvergiya ( III year CSE ) Gaurav Gupta ( III year IT ) Ashvin Suthar ( III year CSE ) Regards, LUG at RTUKota P.S.--> Please pardon any grammatical erorrs , i tried my best to avoid them . *Presentations* can be downloaded from here.
