Some models are built by Toshiba itself (Toshiba BIOS), some are Compal OEMs (Phoenix BIOS). toshiba_acpi does work only on machines with a Toshiba BIOS. For Compal machines you might look into the omnibook kernel modul. This driver is not included in Fedora kernel, so you have to compile it by yourself. cu romal From hsg at phy.duke.edu Sat Feb 2 02:33:11 2008 From: hsg at phy.duke.edu (Henry S. Greenside) Date: 01 Feb 2008 21:33:11 -0500 Subject: How to deal with "Partition table on device sda was unreadable" Message-ID: I tried to upgrade my Thinkpad X61s today with a Fedora 8 64-bit distro on DVD. This laptop has been running Vista Business and Fedora 7 for many months and I have had no trouble installing Fedora in the past. But this time I have been stymied. When I tried to install Fedora 8, I got as far as the screens that ask for language and keyboard type, but then got this error message "The partition table on device sda was unreadable" when I got to the pages related to setting up partitions, followed by the option to destroy all partitions. (I don't think so.) Searching the Internet indicates this is a known bug http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F8Common#head-6908d00fe8346c4da773d32c5d1aaf3415d9713f and the fix is evidently to type something like linux libata.ignore_hpa=1 at the boot prompt. I tried this as follows: when I got to the Welcome screen (the very first screen of the F8 install procedure), I hit the escape key, which brought me to a some kind of shell window with a prompt. I then typed the above line linux libata.ignore_hpa=1 but ran into the same problem, the partition table was unreadable, so installation failed. So I have two questions: - What am I doing wrong? For example, am I supposed to give the command http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F8Common#head-6908d00fe8346c4da773d32c5d1aaf3415d9713f to the prompt at some point during installation? - Does anyone know how to work around this bug? While I haven't tried the F8 live CD, this message is coming to you from a Dell D610 that regularly runs F7, F8 and more recently F9-Alpha with no problems at all. Then, I still have to figure out how to use the kickstart file in the process to end up with the XFCE spin on my good old machine. I burned the boot CD to start the network install, and provided the http path for anaconda to access the packages. Anaconda then starts to retrieve the /images/minstg2.img packages and then crashes. Here is the message I get: "Running anaconda 11.3.0.50, the Fedora system installer - please wait... install exited abnormally [1/1]" then the systems shuts down. I assume that my config for an http install is fine as anaconda manages to access the packages... but I can't figure out why it crashes. Can anyone help please? This just makes no sense whatsoever! Anyway, use tpconfig and stock mouse driver in X11. Install with text UI using kernel modifiers (noprobe, headless, noapic, acpi=off) one at the time. Use boot.img from the DVD to do a text install over the network. I'm getting a stack dump all the time. The kernel seems to be alive though. Alt-F2,Alt-F3 and Alt-F4 still works. I can't see any trace of what went wrong in anacron.log or syslog. Booting up in rescue mode from the DVD also works. I wonder what's missing in Fedora that OpenSUSE and Ubunto has. More things to try? Anaconda hangs on the line "Running /sbin/loader". No stack dump this time. Tried both graphical and text mode. No errors in the log. Will download the i386 respin and try that too. /Anders From andha at melerit.se Wed Feb 27 15:45:06 2008 From: andha at melerit.se (Anders Hartman) Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2008 16:45:06 +0100 Subject: Fedora 8 install failure In-Reply-To: <47C57CC2.8090200@kanarip.com> References: <47C35069.3020107@melerit.se> <47C372E8.2040706@redhat.com> <47C57151.1040101@melerit.se> <47C57CC2.8090200@kanarip.com> Message-ID: <47C58582.5020503@melerit.se> Jeroen van Meeuwen skrev: > Anders Hartman wrote: >> I have now tried the following with Fedora 8 Unity 20080204 respin: >> >> Install with graphical UI. >> Install with text UI. >> Install with text UI using kernel modifiers (noprobe, headless, >> noapic, acpi=off) one at the time. >> Use boot.img from the DVD to do a text install over the network. >> >> I'm getting a stack dump all the time. >> > > At what point do you get the stack trace? > >> The kernel seems to be alive though. I can't find any traces of a dmesg-file, only anaconda.log and syslog, both located in the /tmp directory. The anaconda log ends after SElinux has loaded a default policy. anaconda ignores some unknown devices like finger print sensor and (interstingly) the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 320M graphics card. Since I run in text mode this should be allright. Syslog shows no errors except for a missing floppy drive (don't have one). /Anders
