Hello
I just reply to the 3rd query.Install the package "kernel-source-2.x.y-z" ( the
numbers to match with your main kernel package).This will create a directory
/usr/src/linux-2.x.y-z which is the top level dir
for running "make xconfig" to make chnages to the kernel.
