Sorry for top posting but I'm stuck with Lotus Notes at work...anyway, Do you have SELinux enabled? Depending on the context settings you have set in SELinux can really lock down a service. I haven't used proftpd for a while. Does it have any security options (like not running as root or living in a chroot jail) that would keep it from reading your shadow password file?
