It sounds like linux will not install at all. "command--gedit/boot/grub/menu.lst" you need to type gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst to edit gurb options but however if linux would not install you may not be able to edit grub because you need to have linux installed before you can edit grub. Are you using the recovery console to enter these commands?
