I did a variety of things before I got things to work, most notably deleting all extension directories, the extensions.rdf file, the chrome.rdf file, all the "dat" files in the main directory and all the "db" files in the main directory (make backups first and try replacing them one-by-one so you can get most of your profile back). All of this stuff is stored in ~/.mozilla/firefox/<psuedo-random name>/.
