I have been running Fedora 10 on my laptop
for some time and felt it was now safe enough
to migrate my server to Fedora 10 from Fedora 9.
My Fedora 9 System had three file systems, the
Logical Volume File System in ext3 and
two other HDD,s, one the normal IDE Drive on
the Server, the other an USB Drive; each was
formatted as a complete drive without partitions
as ext4. When I attempted to upgrade to Fedora
9 I realized I had forgotten to add the ext4 parameter
to the Kernel Boot Options; the result was that
both of the ext4 HDD file systems were destroyed.
I could not find a way to recover them so I lost
all of the data. This seems unacceptable to me;
if one fails to provide a needed parameter the
least that should happen is a warning message
asking the user to go back and specify the ext4
parameter; however, even if one does not do
so the file systems should not have been destroyed;
they should simply been inaccessible.
