ack.  There's no reason not to have this in.  Obviously we will need to
be more conservative when it comes to porting commands to use this new
backend, but in the mean time let's get it in the tree and get more eyes
on it.

Nice work, Pavel.  I'll try to spend some time beating up on your new
plugin soon, give you more detailed feedback.
