Since this is a rather drastic change, I think it would be nice if the 
client tried to detect the old syntax and provide a message about the 
change. The detection doesn't have to be perfect, of course.
To make that possible we can use JSON-RPC to provide extra data about 
the ValidationError. See the design doc for details.
