[K12OSN] cache running out of file descriptors

Yesterday I noticed "WARNING! Your cache is running out of file
descriptors" in cache.log. Unfortunately it has been going on for some
time but I hadn't been checking the logs aside from glancing at the
squidguard block logs on occasion. Does anyone know what causes this and
where I can look for solutions?

I've googled some for a solution but didn't come up with anything
definitive.
