There is this thing about using ISA network cards.
A few special lines need to be added to /etc/dhcp.conf
with the make, model and MAC adress of the card
in order to get it working.
Somehow the hub messed this up (still baffles me.)
So I solved the "nfs not found" problem by
commenting out the special lines needed for the ISA NIC in
/etc/dhcp.conf,
and replacing the 3Com ISA NIC with a PCI RT8139.
I still don't know why it helped - but it did.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
just to recap on the original Q:
k12ltsp--------utp-cross-over-cable-----------client
(was working 100% for 6 months)
changed that to:
k12ltsp--------utp-----hub-----utp------------client
(no joy, was booting up untill it got to "pivot root", and no further.)
