Hi people,
I'm working for a school here in Brazil, and due to licensing problems,
I suggested them to migrate all the Win95 boxes to Linux with LTSP.
So, I installed one Server with RH8.0 and LTSP (+- 6 months before).
Guided by the LTSP documentation.
The box:
Athlon XP 1800+ (single)
1GB RAM DDR
I think you really ought to put more RAM at the top of the priority
list!!!! I have a mini-lab with only 10 clients and it has 1 Gb RAM.
HD 18GB SCSI 10k rpm
3COM Ethernet (10/100mbps) - I don't remember the model.
The major terminals are 486 with ethernet (ISA NE2000 - 10mbps). And
some K6-2 on-board (Davicom 8129(?) - 10/100mbps) and fewer P-100 (ISA
NE2000). TotaL: 25 terminals.
I think that you may be running too many terminals with too little RAM
and probably the 10mbps is also another potential problem when all 25
clients are logged on.
Due to problems with autosense of the server ethernet card or hub, i had
to change their configuration to work only at 10mbps.
And all worked, with some unstability, but worked.
Did you find that the server "swapped" off the hard drive very much? I
would think that you're hard drive would be going crazy trying to keep
up with the demands (because the RAM couldn't keep up).
After some time, due power problems, I lost all data in the server
(except some configuration files that I did backups). I had to install
everything again. So, I decided to migrate do K12LTSP.
I installed all, and got something working... except some terminals...
- The K6-2 didn't work. Aparently the vesa driver (wich were used
before, and had worked) doesn't work anymore. I Tryied the sis driver,
and got a blured(?) screen.
OBS: The on-board video card is the SIS530 (6236 chipset - not sure).
Does anyone had some suggestion for getting these K6-2 to work?
The problem may have nothing to do with it being K6-2. I'm using a few
K6-2 @ 150 Mhz with 32 Mb RAM and they're fine (though not nearly as
fast as my P-II 450 Mhz w/ 64 Mb RAM clients). I think the trouble is
in the video driver... Can you find the old video driver that WAS
working before (or did your server autodetect it?)? If you can find it
then, you could specify that workstation to load that video driver in
your lts.conf.
And some suggestion to segment, or get the ethernet working at 100mbps?
Remembering that the re$our$e$ are very short at these moment.
Thanks,
Mauro
PS: excuse my english if I did some mistake
Your english is fine! I respect that you are multi-lingual: Brazilian
(Spanish, right?), English and Linux-ese. ;-)
