Re: [K12OSN] Client Monitor is Dark

Is the KVM a powered or manual one?  Did you boot the client with the KVM switched to it?  How close are the resolution, H & V freqs and depth for each? When you say Dark do you mean Blank or is there an image but hardly viewable as if someone turned down the brightness on you.  How about the video cards in each?  In past experiences, I've found some of the inexpensive KVM's react strangely to certain video cards especially poorly shielded ones.  In other cases, some computer BIOS's, for example IBM servers, need a monitor hooked up on boot up or they'll actually show up in black in white after hooking one up until you reboot it. I've also seen some monitors not sync to certain machines connected to it but work fine when switching back to the one that worked.

Kind of hard to diagnose remotely, however, I would try to pin point the problem by trying a few off the following things.
1.  Switch to the client and then turn the monitor off then back on.
2.  Boot the client with the KVM switched to it.
3. By-pass the KVM and plug the monitor directly into the client and reboot it.

If none of this helps then does the client work with another know working monitor?  Are you sure the video card in the client is ok.  Maybe it just took a trip south.  :/  Maybe it's kind of like when a radio head unit blows it's output/amplifier chip but the pre-amps still work fine, the sound is just really week.  In other words maybe the video card went south and is not providing a strong signal.

Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Message Upon sucessfull boot of a client, the screen is to dark to view. How would I or can this be adjusted on the server. It is not the monitor, I have the monitor on a KVM testing a small K12LTSP network for possible implementation, and when switching from the client to the server, the monitor is fine. Switching back to the client, the monitor is again to dark to read.     William Lewis Technology Coordinator Malden School District
