I'm posting this info to the list so that it ends up in the archive in
the hope of saving someone some time should they run into the same
problem I had. Of course, most people aren't as stubbornly insistant
about using old equipment as I am, I suppose.
I had some (old) 3Com 3c509 ISA NICs I wanted to use in my terminal
workstations (connected via coax no less!). But during the boot
process, the workstation would always hang at the dhclient stage,
eventually timing out saying it hadn't gotten a reponse from the dhcp
server. I thought this was really strange since I only have one
server and if the workstation (which was booting via a floppy made
from rom-o-matic) was able to get the kernel from the server, why
wasn't it talking to the dhcp? I ran the 3Com configuration utility,
3c5x9cfg.exe, to look at the card settings, which seemed to be fine
(IRQ 10, address 300, etc.) Anyway, what finally fixed it was running
the 3c5x9cfg.exe utility and telling it to autoconfigure the card.
I'm not sure what this does, because it didn't change the above
settings, but after that, the workstation boots just fine.
