Hey Stuart,
RAID those drives.
Mirror a couple for your system stuff,
Then do a stripe + mirror for the /home mount point. This will allow up
to 50% of the drives to fail, and remain operational.
I remember Julius mentioning something about enhancements to RAID quite
a while ago, can't remember the website though.
The alternative is stripe with distributed parity. This only allows 1
drive to fail and still keep running, 2 or more and the data is toast.
This doesn't make the best use of total capacity, but it provides a
reasonable balance between performance + failure protection + storage
capacity.
John Hansknecht gave some suggestions for sizing.
