Hi gang
After almost three days of trying to figure out what went wrong after
I deleted CUPS and tried to reinstall an upgrade, I decided to scrap
the works and re-install K12LTSP 3.1.2 - all is well now.
Lessons:
1) always keep a current backup of /home and relevant files on
separate hardware - I'll be posting more on this as I learn/deploy.
2) don't un-install any major component and replace it with an
upgrade - it's playing with fire, and most of us don't have enough
training in fire fighting. I now sport 2nd degree cyber-burns...
3) Make sure one of the gurus knows who you are, and can lend you a
hand if things go really wrong: Example Gideon Romm from
symbio-technologies or our own Erik Harrison - worship the air they
breathe - I do.
4) In schools where there is Road Runner or a similar cable carrier,
work with the librarians to keep one machine on their system - most
companies offer at least a connection for free. Should you need to
IRC you can use that system - just in case the chatting ports are
closed by your network people (ahem)
Hope everybody had a restful Veteran's Day (day-old wish for US colleagues)
