I am very courious to understand why LDAP is a scary thing.
As an ISP, we have adopted LDAP for our normal password/authentication
processes. Using Open LDAP and SSL , we can use the PAM modules
to provide access on our machines.
However, we have gone on to start driving our system configurations
out of ldap. Our DNS system, our mail delivery addresses and
our web server rights and configurations are now driven out of
LDAP.
If you look at the ONID system at Oregon State University,
they are providing campus wide support thru LDAP. And they
have provided managed web access to widely dispersed users
via LDAP. Take a look at the packages that OSU is
developing with the http://www.osuosl.org Open Source Lab.
It may be a little hypertechnical to write LDAP schema,
but with the schema already written, what are the issues that
are barriers?
Security?
Complexity?
Ease of use?
Ease of deployment?
Support levels?

% OK here goes. I dont do ldap myself but the guy who maintains or samba
