The file that vanished was /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders.

I did a google search for that file and all of the top hits
where about that file missing. Many of these posts are 2-3 years old,
so this is probably something long-standing with GNOME rather than
being something specific to FC5. For example...

Appearently this command will get you back in business:

        gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders

I'll be testing the update process again later tonight.

I also hope to have full test of the x86_64 version this weekend. As a
side note, the google earth for linux crashed immediately on my dual
opteron machine. I have not tested with a 32 bit machine yet.

There are other things that are python related that are broken after
that first update. The network config gui won't run. I don't recall if
there was a library update in the process or not. I do recall that most
of the post-install scripts failed. Unfortunately, I don't have a list
of what was getting updated. Hmm. I'll check the yum logs.

The network gui & friends all use GNOME, it is probably the calls to gdk-pixbuf
that are causing the python tracebacks for these apps.
