I always struggle with enrollment as there is little incentive, for students, to take an academic elective which does not count as a Math or Science course. Lots of students take Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Calculus because they are recognized by Universities/Colleges as entrance requirements. Not so with CS currently. Hopefully this will change. I would love to see CS be accepted as a Mathematical Science course. I stumbled across the LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS setting in the upstream lts.conf docs which looks like what I want but that doesn't seem to do anything in K12Linux. So I went to trying to mount NFS filesystems with a chroot script instead. I created mount points in /tmp (since that was easy and writeable) and fired up rpcbind and nfslock in init.d. However, when I tried to mount I got some log entries about rpc.statd not being able to write to /var/lib/rpcbind/portmap.xdr. So I created /var/lib/rpcbind as a tmpfs and confirmed it is writeable. Now when I try to mount NFS filesystems it goes away for a very long time with no errors in the client /var/log/messages while the server shows repeated: mountd[1867]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.0.244:736 for ... But eventually I get: mount.nfs: Connection timed out mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting... Any ideas how I can mount extra NFS filesystems on the client? (1st let me say "Sorry for the X-Posting to multiple Lists") I would like to take this opportunity to say that Myself and a friend have stepped up and I will now take over trying to keep LTSP in Fedora Current with the upstream. @ the end of last week I was given access to the LTSP Package on Fedora. I have the src of ltsp-5.2.4 and am in the process of getting this into and .rpm for Fedora 13 & Fedora 14 (x86 & x86_64). This is going to take a little bit of time to get this release into an .rpm, but we hope to have this done within the next week or so... I first need to get my head around how the current version is packaged and then we should be able to get the new version packaged the same way to try and make this all as seamless as possible. - -- Gavin Spurgeon. gspurgeon at redhat.com Red Hat GLS Instructor EMEA Red Hat UK Ltd 64 Baker Street 4th Floor, London, W1U 7DF Mob: +44 7841 231160 Desk: +44 0207 009 4429 (Direct) Tel: +44 1252 362709 Fax: +44 1252 548116 Registered in England and Wales under Company Registration No. 03798903 Directors: Michael Cunningham (USA), Brendan Lane (Ireland), Matt Parson (USA), Charlie Peters (USA) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.14 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Fedora - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAkxpMugACgkQvp6arS3vDiofwQCfbpRRQ6OWcVGojqLGtA23P2Ny myQAniRT93lEr/Dt+i8lz+6lM2bhJqux =GRJ9 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From joseph.bishay at gmail.com Mon Aug 16 13:29:26 2010 From: joseph.bishay at gmail.com (Joseph Bishay) Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2010 09:29:26 -0400 Subject: [K12OSN] ltsp-5.2.4-1.rpm Coming soon to Fedora !!! Still need monitors. That kills the value of PoE clients for me. Also, the last I checked the JackPC stuff was proprietary and underpowered. The IEEE 802.3at-2009 standard is interesting in that it would allow all sorts of MiniITX boards to be PoE powered but for the moment the cost is prohibitive. In my case I already have PoE IP phones so adding PoE clients would require doubling the cable plant. Just not worth it IMO. Frankly, given the additional overhead of LTSP5, I don't think an intel 486 has the horsepower to run it, certainly not if you want a GUI and not just terminals, If you want/need to keep using those terminals, I'd stay with LTSP 4 on CentOS. You won't get stuff like local apps, and local media and sound won't work as well, but on clients like that, you probably weren't running flash or stuff like that anyway. Just wordprocessing and the like. That stuff work's just fine on LTSP4. and CentOS still gets security updates. OTOH, from what I can see, there aren't actually 486 chips, they are '200 mhz x86'. I don't think the intel 486 ever crossed 100mhz IIRC. But at 200mhz, they are probably i586, not i686. The manufacture's website isn't really clear on this. You might try the debianedu distro, it might still support i586 hardware on the clients. I think they recommend 133Mhz or faster and 128Mb of RAM for thin clients. Obviously, if you want diskless workstations or full workstations (processing done on the client side, processing and local storage) then you need more hardware.
