After installing, apt-getting, etc and installing the additional progs I wanted on the server, I successfully connected 32 thin client workstations and on high end laptop(mine) when booting off network. This preserved all the files on the laptop's hard drive which was a big plus. The only thing special I had to do was to the laptop. when booting off the network it would go part way through loading the kernel etc and fail on video, so I had to modify the server's lts.conf file to include mac address reference to the laptop with XSERVER = ati Then the laptop worked fine on the network while preserving my ability to boot up and work on the road. Excellent! Then I used batch files, which I still have, to add over 500 users to the system. There will only be 32 users logging in at a time, but in the course of the school schedule, over 500 people use those 32 computers. The workstations function fine except for sound. I played with lts.conf again and managed to get the ability to play .wav files but not much else. I can't hear sound when going to a website that has sound, or play and hear sound from within games, etc. I also do not like the ftp-like procedure to use the workstations floppy drives. Don't get me wrong, I understand how to use it, and could show the older students how to do so, but the younger grades(we teach kindergarten to Grade 12 here) as well as some teachers, would be lost or definitely frustrated. To make a long story short, I have yet to put any real data, or unrecoverable info on the server. The work of installing I will do again if I have to. Adding the users again is just a matter of running the batch files again. I downloaded the latest/final release of K12LTSP 4.1 the other day. I can burn the iso's and reinstall everything. But I want to know if it is worth doing so. Everything seems to work fine with the version I now have with the exception of the sound on the workstations and the ease of use issue of the floppies. Does the 4.1 version solve most of these problems? Or at least the sound problem? I can live with the floppy issue but think the kids will hate it if they don't get sound. I will do a clean install if someone can tell me that the sound and or floppy problems will go away BTW, the workstations are IBM 300PL model 6562's with onboard nics, video, and sound. nics and vidio work fine with bios upgraded, sound is a Crystal sound card on board, and like I say, I have yet to get them fully functional with 4.0.1 version of K12LTSP thanks for any advice/help you can give me <BLOCKQUOTE TYPE=CITE> <PRE>I would expect a lot of issues, and MAYBE you'll be pleasantly surprised and not have too many.
