When a thumb drive is installed, do you get the folder icons for accessing it? If so, open the folder and check the size reported. I had a similar issue and size that was reported was the size of the server's main drive. If this is happening, 1) make sure that fuse is installed as part of the kernel and running (modprobe fuse will load fuse, though this isn't a permanent fix since it doesn't seem to make fuse start when the system is restarted), 2) make sure all users are part of the fuse group.
