I've run into similar issues with GNOME. What I actually do in
practice is just remove all the .gnome/ and related directories from
~/. I look at it this way: when you upgrade MS Windows, your desktop
settings often get FUBAR'd, so you're better off with a fresh
reinstall. Interestingly, I haven't run into this problem to nearly
the same degree with KDE, which I also use a lot.

Would this kind of scenario (upgrades and such) be a good case for the
"EL" edition of K12LTSP? Thoughts?
I had a 4.x server with a separate /home partition. I installed 5.0 on
a separate server, and just mounted /home from the 4.x box. It didn't
go well. Something with Gnome and its various hidden files in ~/
didn't work well under the 5.0 box; I think I got things like missing
icons, missing menu items, erratic behavior, etc. I ended up just
moving user files from the old server to the new, exploiting tar's
tendency to ignore hidden dot files, e.g., .gnome.

Has anyone attempted to reinstall gnome? After upgrading from an
K12LTSP
4.4.1 to 5.0 server the gnome enviornment is hosed. I should have done
a
fresh install,,I know. When logging into Gnome I get about 3-4 errors.
"
gnome settings daemon could not start", followed by about 3
bonobo-activation server errors. Even the console login is scrambled a
bit :( the login box is there , but, the text is scrambled on it.I can
log into KDE & Icewm fine ( at a terminal)which is strange?Trying
to
login into the console I get the same errors as seen at a terminal
Gnome
login. Ive found the possible fix being
' /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon --sync ' but when running this I
simply get a return of " Segmentaion fault" . I'm wondering if possibly
the RAID drive(S) may be scrambled? I dont think so beings KDE &
Icewm
works alright?

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
