Since you took your w54g out ... you previously probably had a 192.168.x.x network behind the w54g you probably also had set you default gateway to point to the w54g's address (usually 192.168.1.1) the w54g probably already had your ISP (roadrunner, verizon whoever), DNS and DHCP server addresses If you hook all of that directly to your modem... you have to remember that as far as Cable Modem's go your Cable MSO usually only gives you 1 or 2 IP addresses and the cable modem gets 1. Usually that IP address gets assigned to the WAN side of your w54g and you NAT behind the 54g to get your 192.168.x.x addresses and your DHCP gets IP addresses allocated by the w54g. Have you checked whether you can even get an IP address from DHCP? Also a cable modem is not a router a w54g is. so if your ISP (Cable MSO) has say a 65.x.x.x net and your server is using a 192.168.x.x then they won't talk w/out a router to route between the two networks. Sidenote: Some time back I built an k12ltsp server for my neighbor for his kids to run off of.
