The other issue is, how important is an algorithmic mapping between NT RIDs
and UNIX UIDs?

I agree that it's ideal, but if you've already a deployed set of UNIX and NT
accounts, chances are that you're going to stick with the UIDs and SIDs
you've got (unless you want to update permissions on all your filesystems).
For many organizations, storing UNIX and NT account information in a single
directory will be sufficient (perhaps using a notification mechanism to
update UIDs for subsequently created accounts).

This kind of stuff is possible today.

On the other hand, I'm all for working towards the ideal, where NT PDCs are
replaced with SAMBA servers, and SAMBA maps RIDs to UIDs on the fly (or
dynamically updates them in a directory). That's much more interesting :-)
