If you don't want to be on the list, please let us know, and we'll remove you immediately. Or you can manage your own subscription at http://red.ht/11amemL We're excited about this first edition of our monthly newsletter. We're hoping that you find it useful, and that you encourage your colleagues to sign up for future editions. They can sign up at that same address, above. If you haven't already joined us on the RDO Community site, please do. We're at http://bit.ly/17OFGsc and there's a lot of great discussion there around RDO and OpenStack deployment and configuration. * **Please respond to our user survey* An early post on the RDO forum was a request for you to tell us about your experience with RDO. We really want to know how you're using RDO, and what your plans are with OpenStack in general. Would you consider responding to that thread, at http://bit.ly/14JfaKk in the forum, and telling us your story? *Setting up an NFS share for Nova instances* In addition to the RDO forum and community website (http://bit.ly/17OFGsc ) there's also the rdo-list mailing list ( http://red.ht/18qNAqX ) where you have direct access to the engineers who are working on RDO, as well as on the upstream OpenStack project. If you prefer a mailing list to a forum, this is the righe place for you. In a recent posting, Kashyap Chamarthy shares his notes on configuring Nova to use NFS for storage: http://red.ht/13lovvj *We're on IRC* For those of you who prefer a more immediate kind of connection, or if you want to learn by listening in on the conversations of other RDO users, we've started the #rdo channel on the Freenode IRC network. The channel usually has several OpenStack developers on it who can answer your RDO questions, or questions about OpenStack in general If you're not already an IRC user, there are dozens of Open Source IRC clients available for whatever operating system you're using, or you can use the web chat client at http://bit.ly/1b1ZKpz *Fedora 19 images available for OpenStack* The Fedora team is right on the cusp of releasing Fedora 19, and there's a RC3 (Release Candidate 3) image that you can deploy on your OpenStack installation. You can read more about it in the RDO forum, at http://bit.ly/14JfAjW * **RDO will be at OSCon* The O'Reilly Open Source Convention will be held in Portland, Oregon, July 22-26. Once again this year, there will be a big OpenStack presence at OSCon, and RDO will be there too. We'll be in the RedHat booth (#217), and we'll also be hanging out at the OpenStack Pavilion. There will be a reception in the Expo Hall on Tuesday night from 5-6pm, and then we'll also be there all day Wednesday and Thursday. If you're going to be at OSCon, please drop by and say hello. *OpenStack at Red Hat Summit* RDO and OpenStack had a lot to say at the Red Hat Summit a few weeks ago in Boston. Along with the exciting announcements around Red Hat's new OpenStack offerings (See http://bit.ly/11Um80P ) there was a lot of great OpenStack content in the conference. Fortunately, a lot of that content was recorded, and you can watch some of it at http://bit.ly/129AZzX RDO also had a booth there, and we had a drawing for a couple of Nexus 4's. Congratulations to Jean-Fran?ois Saucier and Gerald Nazareth who won the drawing, and many thanks to the hundreds of you who stopped by to chat with us and learn more about RDO and OpenStack. *Until next time ...* Thanks again for being part of the RDO community. Please drop by and see us at the RDO forum - http://bit.ly/16JICll - and at OSCon. We're looking forward to the coming months, and would love to hear what you're doing with RDO. Thanks! Unless this is the exception rather than the norm - that provisioning is as much about integration as configuration - it will be a challenge to provide generally useful provisioning guidelines. m. > Right now, it's just documentation, but perhaps in the future there is > a better solution. Additionally, I caught this one (qpidd doesn't start and packstack doesn't report it failing) from the fedora RPM: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=981601 Some of the above issues are fixed in the upstream packstack git repo, so I would recommend anyone else to take a look at that (although it has it's own bugs which I will try to report). For my future reference and the benefit of anyone else trying to use packstack on f19 ATM (using the RPM openstack-packstack-2013.1.1-0.3.dev527.fc19.noarch), I also ran into these problems: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=979041 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=978647 -- > /kashyap > Cheers -- Jonathan Barber <jonathan.barber at gmail.com> -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The OpenStack page here: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Packstack says that the RH Bugzilla should be used "only to report bugs found in packages provided in Fedora or EPEL", and my puppet and git foo isn't great enough to be able to fix some of the problems I'm hitting and know how to submit them for review via the contributor route. Fairly identical. Upstream FreeIPA has support for cross realm trusts, which is a preetty high demand item: users in the corporate LDAP can authenticate against it instead of having to have an entry in a local FreeIPA server. One of the most high demand items in IdM development. I still haven't quite figured out what the Keystone integration with this will require. It might mess things up if there is no user record in LDAP, but I think that there is a lazy-load placeholder for users and group lists. > > Michael. > >> On 06/13/2013 10:57 PM, Michael Solberg wrote: >>> On 06/13/2013 04:20 PM, Dave Neary wrote: >>>> Hi, >>>> >>>> Yes! A major factor in this discussion is whether or not at least RPM and DEB packages will be available on or shortly after release day (and if the latter what is "shortly"). Is there an advertised schedule/expectation for when RDO Havana builds will appear relative to each milestone and ultimately the final release? Is there an advertised schedule/expectation for when RDO > Havana builds will appear relative to each milestone and ultimately > the final release? I think the answer is that RDO Havana RPMs are available within a few days of an upstream release. P?draig, where is the 'stable' RDO Havana repo that contains the Havana-1 Milestone packages? I see the nightly repo on the RDO repos site, but not a snapshot for the stable releases. And aside from that we've also got nightly builds of all Havana projects being done as well. RPMs for that are available here: http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/openstack/openstack-trunk/el6/x86_64/ Note: The nightly builds are presently missing Heat, Ceilometer and Neutron. It looks like Ceilometer needs puppet modules created, in order for us to get that into Smokestack and therefor into the nightly builds. Eoghan will be checking this out. Heat has puppet modules contributed by eNovance here: https://github.com/packstack/puppet-heat But we need to work with them to get those into Stackforge, so they're more official. sdake, can you follow up on that? Since we have Heat puppet modules, it should be easier to get Heat into Smokestack. Neutron has puppet modules in Stackforge, but I'm not sure what the blockers are for getting it into Smokestack and therefore into the nightly builds. Dan may have more details here. There was some work to get this in place, but for future milestones and the Havana release, this will be in place and thus the packages will be ready for public release in a much more timely fashion. > And aside from that we've also got nightly builds of all Havana projects > being done as well. Note those require puppet modules for full integration with smokestack, though as I understand it, we may be able to produce builds for testing outside of smokestack. I.E. the rpm building is not gated on those puppet modules. jruzicka is looking at doing that. thanks, P?draig. The eNovance puppet-ceilometer modules have already been promoted to stackforge[1] so we've got a starting point. The main deficiency of what's there currently is the lack of support for emitting qpid-specific config into the ceilo config files. So it's effectively rabbitMQ-only for now. I don't think it would be too much work to add the analogous qpid config (username, password etc), but in the meantime dprince has indicated an exception could be made to test ceilometer only on rabbitMQ initially. > Heat has puppet modules contributed by eNovance here: > https://github.com/packstack/puppet-heat > But we need to work with them to get those into Stackforge, so they're > more official. sdake, can you follow up on that? I chatted with Emilien Macchi, the eNovance guy mainly responsible for puppet-heat, and he's eager to get this into stackforge once it's better tested. In fact he asked for help on the puppetlabs ML[2] a while back and got no response. If we could point some resource to helping him out, it would expedite things. In the meantime, dprince has confirmed that an exception can be argued for a module outside stackforge if it's generally considered the canonical module for that project. That would give us a stop-gap. Cheers, Eoghan [1] https://github.com/stackforge/puppet-ceilometer [2] https://groups.google.com/a/puppetlabs.com/forum/#!searchin/puppet-openstack/heat/puppet-openstack/rD3JYu7qod8/U5eXO0LLWnsJ > Since we have Heat puppet modules, it should be easier to get Heat into > Smokestack. > > Neutron has puppet modules in Stackforge, but I'm not sure what the > blockers are for getting it into Smokestack and therefore into the > nightly builds. Please see the README or browse these repositories at: http://rdo.fedorapeople.org/openstack/openstack-trunk/ Also we now have the more standard release repository for Havana, which contains the recently released Havana milestone 2 packages. The best way to interact with this repository is to follow the RDO quick start guide at: http://openstack.redhat.com/Quickstart while just replacing "grizzly" with "havana" in step 1. This package set can be used with EL6 based distros or Fedora 19. Fedora 19 contains OpenStack Grizzly packages in the official Fedora repositories, and RDO makes the next OpenStack version available for test and evaluation. These repositories can be browsed at: http://rdo.fedorapeople.org/openstack/openstack-havana/ A caveat to note with the above repositories, is that the openstack-neutron packages are not yet available. These will be made available in the coming days. thanks, P?draig. Please see the README or browse these repositories at: > http://rdo.fedorapeople.org/openstack/openstack-trunk/ One thing to note, is that we're working on getting up some additional smoke testing/CI of these nightly builds via Packstack installs (all-in-one and multi-node) Smokestack itself already does testing on the packages it builds, but it doesn't use Packstack (it just uses the puppet modules directly) and I don't think it does multi-host installs. So this 2nd level of deployment validation will allow us to tag specific Smokestack builds as either good or bad. Ideally we have multiple repos here instead of a monolithic one. For example: openstack/openstack-trunk/el6/20130724 openstack/openstack-trunk/el6/20130725 openstack/openstack-trunk/el6/20130726 With links like: openstack/openstack-trunk/el6/latest -> 20130726 openstack/openstack-trunk/el6/latest-good -> 20130725 > Also we now have the more standard release repository for Havana, > which contains the recently released Havana milestone 2 packages. > The best way to interact with this repository is to follow > the RDO quick start guide at: http://openstack.redhat.com/Quickstart > while just replacing "grizzly" with "havana" in step 1. I'm using RHEL6.4.z with RDO. # rpm -q openstack-packstack openstack-packstack-2013.1.1-0.24.dev651.el6ost.noarch I run 'packstack --allinone' The first issue is with the qemu-kvm package name: ERROR : Error during puppet run : err: /Stage[main]//Package[qemu-kvm-rhev]/ensure: change from absent to present failed: Execution of '/usr/bin/yum -d 0 -e 0 -y install qemu-kvm-rhev' returned 1: Error: Nothing to do The problem lies in nova_compute.pp, where "package {'qemu-kvm-rhev':" should be "package { 'qemu-kvm':" for RDO. The Packstack version in F19 is quite old and doesn't include any Quantum support yet. Try the version from updates-testing and everything will be there. F19 stable: openstack-packstack-2013.1.1-0.3.dev527.fc19.noarch EL6/RDO: openstack-packstack-2013.1.1-0.20.dev642.el6.noarch F19 updates-testing: openstack-packstack-2013.1.1-0.21.dev651.fc19.noarch Packstack not being (up-)karma-ed in Fedora has been a problem for ages already. Fedora Packstack users should finally get involved in Fedora QA. Or if someone in the RDO team does actually test Packstack in Fedora, they should remember giving karma. -- Sandro > > Cheers, > Dave. > > -- > Dave Neary - Community Action and Impact > Open Source and Standards, Red Hat - http://community.redhat.com > Ph: +33 9 50 71 55 62 / Cell: +33 6 77 01 92 13 > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
