It has huge impact on OS users, more is explained in forwarded e-mail. Situation is, that we might not be able to get navigation into upstream/master in very short timeframe (1-2 weeks). Question then is, if it makes sense to include the change in RDO first and then to RHOS (even if upstream/master might adapt it later and in a bit *different* form), or if it should be considered only RHOS business and RDO will adapt it once it is merged to upstream master. My opinion is that RDO is tracking stable upstream version, so it looks more like 'only product tweak'. But I wanted to hear also the voice of community - what you think? Situation is following: - Currently OpenStack dashboard has vertical navigation - There are various usability issues - It is not very close to other RH products - We are trying to promote horizontal navigation to OpenStack Dashboard - Currently it is under discussions of design proposal and I am building static prototype - We would like to try to get it into upstream master as soon as possible (beginning of November) - Benefits of this improvement - Enhancement of navigation will largely increase UX - We will get closer to other RH products look & feel I wanted to confirm also with you, with all above mentioned facts, do you see backporting this upstream feature into downstream Havana possible (given the fact that it is in Icehouse upstream by November)? Can QE test other aspects of OpenStack and focus on UI a bit later so we can try to add navigation change in? As long as this is *not* something what could break functionality of OpenStack - it is just UI enhancement - I hope that it is possible. We cannot assure that it will pass through community in time, but if we manage that, I believe it can help RHOS a lot. RDO packages what is shipped by upstream OpenStack - if you are proposing putting a change into Red Hat OpenStack as a path to getting it into RDO, that won't work. The usual path to getting something into RDO is to propose a patch upstream to OpenStack. Also, you mention that this is a change to the UI in Icehouse which you want to backport to Havana, a change which is too significant to make it into Havana before release. I don't think it's good to have features present in RDO Havana which are not yet committed upstream. Perhaps the patch would be accepted into the stable Havana branch, in which case it would be in RDO packages as soon as OpenStack 2013.1.1 is released? > Link to navigation proposal: > https://plus.google.com/115177641540718537778/posts/EEwGmhfDbHB Thanks! Yes, but it won't be backported into upstream Havana. From the upstream point of view, the feature will be available only in Icehouse. What is the intention is to get this important change to our customers as soon as possible. It means, if we make this happen, downstream Havana release would deffer a bit from upstream Havana release (because of the navigation and branding of course). >> Link to navigation proposal: >> https://plus.google.com/115177641540718537778/posts/EEwGmhfDbHB > Thanks! > Dave. > Did that help to clarify the situation? -- Jarda -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I would suggest that it should get into RDO through Icehouse nightlies. If Red Hat wants to put it in their product without the patches being in a stable release upstream, then that's up to product management, but I don't think it should go into RDO if it isn't upstream. RDO is the latest stable OpenStack packaged for RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, and derivative distributions, making it as easy as possible to deploy OpenStack on the industry's most trusted Linux platforms. It's been an exciting and busy month for RDO, and we have even more planned for October and beyond. September Events: Since the last newsletter, there have been a number of events around RDO. We're keeping track of upcoming events in the RDO wiki, at http://openstack.redhat.com/Events so if you have any RDO or OpenStack events that you'd like to promote to the RDO community, please go ahead and add them there, so that we can help you get the word out. On September 10th and 11th, we had the Havana RDO Test Day - http://openstack.redhat.com/RDO_Test_Day_September_2013 - where we tested various scenarios on RDO OpenStack. We had dozens of people participate in testing, and 15 testers opened 29 Bugzilla tickets. The 'Tested Setups' page - http://openstack.redhat.com/TestedSetups - is an ongoing effort to track the status of these tickets, as well as other common scenarios, and their progress from one release of RDO to another. If you're testing RDO, please update that page with your results, so that we can continue to make RDO better. LinuxCon North America was in New Orleans during the week of September 16, and Rich was there working in the OpenStack booth with community members from various other OpenStack member companies. We had great conversations with people using OpenStack on various platforms for various kinds of tasks, from deploying VMs for Computer Science students at East Carolina University to managing low-energy server hardware at the Servergy. It's exciting to be part of such a fast-moving project, spanning so many companies and use cases. On September 24th, we hosted a Google Hangout where Dave Neary gave an overview of OpenStack networking with Neutron. Although it's hard to get exact numbers, it appears that around 65 people attended, despite the technical difficulties we had getting the Hangout going. You can watch the recording of the event at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afImoFeuDnY And we're hoping to have more of these in the coming months. You should watch the RDO forum - http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/ - for an announcement of date and time. Upcoming Events: There's a lot coming up in October, and, once again, we encourage you to watch the events page in the wiki, and to add events that you know about so that we can help you get the word out. This week in Paris is the Open World Forum - http://openworldforum.org/ - covering a wide range of Open Source topics. A number of members of the RDO community will be giving talks there - Dave Neary will be there presenting on the Open Hybrid Cloud - http://openworldforum.org/en/tracks/21#talk_87 , Steve Hardy will be speaking about Heat and Orchestration in OpenStack - http://www.openworldforum.org/en/tracks/21#talk_93 , and Herv? Lemaitre will be speaking about building an open hybrid cloud with Open Source - http://www.openworldforum.org/en/tracks/8#talk_175 On October 3rd, OpenStack France is having another meetup - http://www.meetup.com/OpenStack-France/events/133517702/ , and on December 6th, the Swiss OpenStack User Group will be holding a meetup at CERN - http://www.meetup.com/openstack-ch/events/138151562/ Later in the month - October 21-23 - many of the Red Hat OpenStack team will be at LinuxCon Europe, CloudOpen, and the KVM Forum in Edinburgh, Scotland - http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon-europe We would love to talk with you about what you're doing with RDO, so please drop me a note (rbowen at redhat.com) if you're going to be there, and we'll work something out. October 17th is an exciting date in the OpenStack community. That's the day when OpenStack Havana will be released. With the great success of the test day in September, we'd like to do a followup test day after the Havana release. But with so many of us travelling the week after the release, we're planning to do this next test day on October 29th and 30th. You can find out more about this event at http://openstack.redhat.com/RDO_Test_Day_October_2013 and in the RDO forums as we get closer to the event. We would love to have you join us and kick the tires on this new release, and our packaging of it. By the time the next edition of the newsletter goes out, we'll be on the way to Hong Kong for the OpenStack Summit - http://www.openstack.org/summit/openstack-summit-hong-kong-2013/ It's the big event for OpenStack developers and users, and it would be great to see you there. The agenda has just been published, at http://openstacksummitnovember2013.sched.org/ and there's a lot of great content, including presentations on RDO. Articles: Participation in the RDO wiki has been way up over the last month, and we have some great new articles to help you understand OpenStack. There's a new article explaining the difference between floating IPs and private IPs - http://openstack.redhat.com/Difference_between_Floating_IP_and_private_IP A writeup of using Neutron with your existing external network came in through the forum and is now in the wiki at http://openstack.redhat.com/Neutron_with_existing_external_network There's this new writeup of deploying an application using Heat - http://openstack.redhat.com/Deploy_an_application_with_Heat And, one more, an article on deploying RDO using Foreman - http://openstack.redhat.com/Deploying_RDO_Using_Foreman If you have something that you'd like to add to the conversation, please sign up and start writing. Your insight and examples on deploying OpenStack may help someone else who's doing a similiar thing. Don't worry if it's not polished or eloquent - the important thing is to capture the content, and other can help polish it later. User Stories: Speaking of your story, we want to hear what you're doing with OpenStack, and particularly with RDO. If you're using RDO, we'd like to hear about what you're doing, how you're doing it, and what you had to do to make things work. I'd like to talk with you, either via email, or speak with you, to get some of these stories written down. It's inspiring to the development team to see how their work is being used, and it's encouraging to new users of OpenStack to hear about other folks successfully deploying OpenStack. We'd also like to hear from you about what gives you the biggest problems in using RDO, or what you really love about it. We're looking towards doing the next series of usability improvements, and we want to be sure that we're in sync with you on what those should be. Please start a conversation on the forum if there's something that you find to be annoying or inconvenient that we could improve. Or, if you have a particular problem and work through it, tell us what the problem was and how you solved it, so that we can start thinking about ways to avoid that problem. It's also a big help to others facing the same problem Either way, drop by the RDO forum - http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/ - and tell us all about it. In Closing: Thanks again for being part of the RDO community. Please invite your friends to sign up for the list, at https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/rdo-newsletter and send them to the RDO Forum with their OpenStack questions. -- Rich, for the RDO Community http://openstack.redhat.com/ Twitter: @RDOCommunity Google+: https://plus.google.com/communities/110409030763231732154 _______________________________________________ Rdo-newsletter mailing list Rdo-newsletter at redhat.com https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/rdo-newsletter From rdo-info at redhat.com Tue Oct 1 18:51:40 2013 From: rdo-info at redhat.com (RDO Forum) Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2013 18:51:40 +0000 Subject: [Rdo-list] [RDO] OpenStack Networking Part II - October 31 Message-ID: <00000141755c8608-445a0f1b-2973-4e2b-99c0-9df8140bc96f-000000@email.amazonses.com> rbowen started a discussion. It marks the end of the "Havana" 6-month-long development cycle, which saw the addition of two integrated components (Ceilometer and Heat), the completion of more than 400 feature blueprints and the fixing of more than 3000 reported bugs ! Moving this thread to rdo-list > though, since it is RDO related I don't think that there are any targeted docs up anywhere yet. However, I've been testing it myself to try to make sure we know what the best plan of action is. I have a tool up that I use for testing this, and the scenario files are fairly readable. This is the easiest and most straightforward way to go: https://github.com/kk7ds/test_rdo_upgrade/blob/master/scenarios/grizzly2havana.sh That has stuff in it for testing the before/after cases which you probably don't want to do, but the steps are basically the same. Shutdown all the services, upgrade the packages on all the nodes, then run the database upgrades, and then start everything back up. Note that the scenario above includes a re-run of packstack, but this is not really necessary. To do the database upgrades, each service has a "manage" tool that does low-level database management, so for nova it is: nova-manage db sync This tool only needs to be run once per service and the order of services doesn't matter. Make sense? I will try to get my notes up on a public wiki page somewhere so that this is available someplace other than just this email thread. --Dan From dfv at eurotux.com Mon Oct 21 16:19:14 2013 From: dfv at eurotux.com (Diogo Vieira) Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2013 17:19:14 +0100 Subject: [Rdo-list] [rhos-list] Openstack Grizzly upgrade to Havana In-Reply-To: <52655063.7080903@redhat.com> References: <2FA0AA5C-1677-4914-BEFC-258D5BD5F9FC@eurotux.com> <52654CF5.8050502@redhat.com> <52655063.7080903@redhat.com> Message-ID: Thank you! Yeah, I definitely need to get that up :) > Have you had a look at what it would take to do a rolling upgrade > rather than down all the services ? Yeah. So, Lars just wrote back about the service-by-service approach, which also works well and provides smaller downtime gaps and fewer "committed" components during the upgrade if something goes wrong. Further, it also lets you upgrade everything except nova, and then deploy a new havana nova cluster that shares resources with the still-on-grizzly deployment. With that, you can slowly migrate your instances to the new nova deployment, growing that deployment as nodes become vacated from the old one, eventually deprecating the old one completely. That offers tenant, credential, image, and volume continuity across the upgrade, as well as a much larger timeframe to migrate everything, other than just "nova is down, move everything!!" :) To me, "rolling upgrades" means something else, which I think is probably what you're referring to. My upstream work right now is targeted at making sure that we can upgrade nova components individually without needing the parallel nova deployment above. We're getting ever closer to this being a reality, and I _hope_ we will start gating on "not breaking live upgrades" in the Icehouse or J timeframes. --Dan From Tim.Bell at cern.ch Mon Oct 21 18:28:27 2013 From: Tim.Bell at cern.ch (Tim Bell) Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2013 18:28:27 +0000 Subject: [Rdo-list] [rhos-list] Openstack Grizzly upgrade to Havana In-Reply-To: <52657104.80807@redhat.com> References: <2FA0AA5C-1677-4914-BEFC-258D5BD5F9FC@eurotux.com> <52654CF5.8050502@redhat.com> <52655063.7080903@redhat.com> <5D7F9996EA547448BC6C54C8C5AAF4E5D97AA101@CERNXCHG01.cern.ch> <52657104.80807@redhat.com> Message-ID: <5D7F9996EA547448BC6C54C8C5AAF4E5D97AA863@CERNXCHG01.cern.ch> Any idea how cells would fit into this ? I don't, no. I would love to get to the point where Cells helps the upgrade story, by supporting upgrade of individual cells, or adding a new cell of Havana to make the situation I described easier to deploy. However, I don't think enough people outside the CD camp are using, and specifically, *contributing* to cells to make this a reality. > Trying to work out the upgrade order for the Nova API cells vs the > compute cells is one of our open questions.... Yeah, I don't think I have anything to offer for this at the moment. The objects work we're doing upstream to make this work for nova itself will definitely help make this a reality, but I think the relatively small number of people deploying (and again, contributing to) cells means this doesn't get a lot of attention :( --Dan From rdo-info at redhat.com Tue Oct 22 03:53:52 2013 From: rdo-info at redhat.com (RDO Forum) Date: Tue, 22 Oct 2013 03:53:52 +0000 Subject: [Rdo-list] [RDO] kvm boot promble on guest boot after Message-ID: <00000141de4c1f27-67e570e6-f6a9-4387-9888-eef186cebcc9-000000@email.amazonses.com> xiaoyz started a discussion. kvm boot promble on guest boot after --- Follow the link below to check it out: http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/discussion/702/kvm-boot-promble-on-guest-boot-after Have a great day! These custom kernel packages include extra networking functionality required to facilitate advanced OpenStack Networking deployments. This update fixes 2 moderate security issues: * A flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel's TCP/IP protocol suite implementation handled IPv6 sockets that used the UDP_CORK option. A local, unprivileged user could use this flaw to cause a denial of service. https://www.redhat.com/security/data/cve/CVE-2013-4162.html * An information leak flaw was found in the way Linux kernel's device mapper subsystem, under certain conditions, interpreted data written to snapshot block devices. An attacker could use this flaw to read data from disk blocks in free space, which are normally inaccessible. https://www.redhat.com/security/data/cve/CVE-2013-4299.html Red Hat would like to thank Hannes Frederic Sowa for reporting CVE-2013-4162; and Fujitsu for reporting CVE-2013-4299. This update also adds the following enhancements: * Support for Distributed Overlay Virtual Ethernet (DOVE). https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1009025 * Support for Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) as an OpenvSwitch (OVS) tunneling type. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1009006 All RDO Enterprise Linux users deploying the OpenStack Networking service are advised to install these updated packages. The packages containing the fixes are: kernel-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.src.rpm python-perf-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm python-perf-debuginfo-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm kernel-headers-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm perf-debuginfo-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm kernel-devel-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm kernel-debuginfo-common-x86_64-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm perf-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm kernel-debuginfo-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm kernel-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.x86_64.rpm kernel-firmware-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.noarch.rpm kernel-doc-2.6.32-358.123.2.openstack.el6.noarch.rpm thanks, P?draig. seem to have read somewhere that a 500 status in horizon may be caused by one of the others components failing. So I'm assuming this could be my problem. Furthermore, I found that snippet may be the relevant part of the logs because I found some bug reports indicating that this could be a problem with dnsmasq. The problem is that I have version 2.66 of dnsmasq installed in the system. Can someone help me? I.E. that version requires django 1.4, which currently requires the work around described in the bug. Your issue is actually with the havana (2013.2) version copied from Fedora 20 to a Fedora 19 in the RDO specific repositories for convenience. That version is supposedly compatible with django 1.5 (hence why it installed with django 1.5 without any dependency issues). By forcing django 1.4 with a similar method used in bug 978647, you avoided the issue. So this is a separate bug (with django 1.5), which may be related to ALLOWED_HOSTS setting. thanks, P?draig. Can you get a list of avc messages? If SELinux is the issue, there should be some avc errors in the logs that you can retrieve with: sudo audit2allow -a sudo audit2why -a (In Fedora these commands are in the policycoreutils-python package) But yes, file a bug with the avc messages that look like they are interfering with Neutron DHCP agent and we can work to fix the policies. Also, please let us know which version of selinux-policy and selinux-policy-targeted are installed on your machine. Message-ID: <20131030165321.GF7092@redhat.com> I'm running RDO Havana on Fedora 19, when trying to connect to Horizon I get: Something went wrong! An unexpected error has occurred. Try refreshing the page. If that doesn't help, contact your local administrator. There's nothing in either the apache error log or in the horizon log (which suggests we need to improve logging...but that's a separate issue). If I set DEBUG=True in /etc/openstack-dashboard/local_settings, suddenly horizon starts working. I'd appreciate any debugging ideas. -- Lars Kellogg-Stedman -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... As you discovered this was due to ALLOWED_HOSTS not being set. Both this and the logging issue should get fixed with this patch [0] proposed to packstack, which includes the latest updates to the local settings recently merged in puppet-horizon. In the meantime to get useful logs, you can update the LOGGING dictionary to match the one suggested upstream [1] (the 'django' logger missing + logging levels not being set was the issue). Hope this helps, Julie [0] https://review.openstack.org/#/c/54606 [1] https://github.com/openstack/horizon/blob/master/openstack_dashboard/local/local_settings.py.example#L241 > > -- > Lars Kellogg-Stedman > > > _______________________________________________ > Rdo-list mailing list > Rdo-list at redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/rdo-list > From rdo-info at redhat.com Thu Oct 31 12:37:03 2013 From: rdo-info at redhat.com (RDO Forum) Date: Thu, 31 Oct 2013 12:37:03 +0000 Subject: [Rdo-list] [RDO] Havana: Neutron looking in /usr/share/neutron/neutron-dist.conf ?? I understand, although I wonder (and I see from the discussion that I'm not the only one) if we have the necessary information available during the packstack run to set this variable sanely. It sounds like Julie's fix for the logging is probably the more important fix here, since this will make the problem more obvious if ALLOWED_HOSTS is either not set or set to an incorrect value. -- Lars Kellogg-Stedman -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
