RDO is the latest stable OpenStack packaged for RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, and derivative distributions, making it as easy as possible to deploy OpenStack on the industry's most trusted Linux platforms. (You can manage your list subscription at http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/rdo-newsletter ) Google Hangout, Test Day, Events -------------------------------- There's several upcoming events that I want to tell you about. Wherever you are in the world, there's probably one nearby. With the Havana milestone 3 due out the week of September 9th, we're planning to have an RDO Test Day on September 10th and 11th (to cover various time zones) where we can put it through its paces. The details of that test day will be at http://openstack.redhat.com/Test_Day_09_2013 as they become available, including what you'll need in order to participate. And, since we've noticed that a large percentage of questions on the RDO Forum - http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/ - are focused on networking, we're planning to have a Google Hangout on September 24th, at 12pm Eastern time, (9am Pacific, 17:00 GMT, http://bit.ly/1cnEZEN for your local timezone.) You can see the hangout details, and let us know you're coming, at https://plus.google.com/events/cph9aq3a6ag1lb17g3gsvaiiljg Conferences and Meetups ----------------------- There are so many events around OpenStack that it's hard to keep track of them all. We've put a page at http://openstack.redhat.com/Events for events where you're likely to encounter people from the RDO community, and we'd love it if you'd add your events there (it's a wiki!) or let us know that you're going to be there too. Here's some of the events that are coming up in the next few months. The SFBay OpenStack Meetup will be held September 10, at 6:30 at EVault HQ in San Francisco. You can get more details at MEETUP LINK GOES HERE LinuxCon North America will be held in New Orleans, September 16-18. More details can be found at http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon-north-america I'll be there, as will a number of members of the RDO community, and we'd love to talk with you over a beer about what you're doing with RDO. Please drop me a line (rbowen at redhat.com) if you'll be there. LinuxCon Europe - http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon-europe - will be held in Edinburgh, October 21-23, and the KVM Forum - http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon-europe - will be colocated there, so there will be lots of RDO and OpenStack activity that week. So, if you're on that side of the world, come see us there! And, it's still a ways out, but the OpenStack Summit in Hong Kong (November 5-8) - http://www.openstack.org/summit/openstack-summit-hong-kong-2013/ - is getting ever closer. If you're planning to be there, please plan to stop by our booth and say hello. We're hoping to do some interviews about how you're using RDO in your company, so if you're willing to partcipate in that, do let us know. Articles -------- We've noticed a lot of great articles this month, both on the RDO site and elsewhere, about various details of deploying OpenStack with RDO. Here's a few of them, but we also mention these on Twitter (@RDOCommunity) whenever we come across them. Load Balacing OpenStack API Services - http://openstack.redhat.com/Load_Balance_OpenStack_API This guide will show how to manually deploy additional OpenStack controller nodes and configure HAProxy to load-balance each OpenStack API service. Using GRE Tenant Networks - http://openstack.redhat.com/Using_GRE_Tenant_Networks Using GRE tunnels as tenant networks in Neutron avoids the need for a network interface connected to a switch configured to trunk a range of VLANs. Here are simple instructions for taking advantage of GRE for tenant networks. Installing OpenStack (Grizzly) on CentOS 6.4 with Packstack of - http://oss.fulltrust.co.jp/?p=521 This article is in Japanese, and walks through the process of standing up an OpenStack cloud in CentOS. You can read that at http://www.blog.sandro-mathys.ch/2013/08/install-rdo-havana-2-on-fedora-19-and.html Finally, Dave just posted list of recent articles and blog posts to the RDO forum at http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/discussion/520/a-tour-of-openstack-blogs If you come across useful articles, please let us know on @RDOCommunity, or post links on the RDO Forum, at http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/ In Closing ---------- Thanks again for being part of the RDO community. A misconfiguration of Varnish was causing the client IP address to not get passed to the back-end. This was, in turn, foiling counter-spam measures. So, we fixed that, and also added a counter-spam-bot measure on the forums. This has, at least for now, defeated the spam attack that we'd been having for the past few weeks. We haven't seen any new spam since those changes. Many thanks to the folks who stepped up to moderate the forum during the worst of it. -- Rich Bowen OpenStack Community Liaison http://openstack.redhat.com/ From rdo-info at redhat.com Thu Sep 5 12:43:32 2013 From: rdo-info at redhat.com (RDO Forum) Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2013 12:43:32 +0000 Subject: [Rdo-list] [RDO] Launch instance problems Message-ID: <00000140ee262503-d3e8517e-bd6e-4012-b423-51bfaf80556d-000000@email.amazonses.com> SergeyKostin started a discussion. I'm using machines that were reprovisioned to rhel6.4 with epel repo. I deleted the epel repo manually and cleaned yum cache etc (yum clean all), then I've ran packstack with the "CONFIG_USE_EPEL=y" in order to have epel repo created and enabled by packstack (the CONFIG_USE_EPEL's doc string says 'To subscribe each server to EPEL enter "y"'). Message-ID: <5231CD24.4060508@redhat.com> Thanks so much to everyone who participated in the RDO Test Day over the last 48 hours or so. The results of the testing can be seen at http://openstack.redhat.com/TestedSetups and in the Workarounds page at http://openstack.redhat.com/Workarounds Additionally, 29 tickets were opened in Bugzilla, with John Dennis and Xavier Queralt opening five each. community.redhat.com published a blog post about the event: http://community.redhat.com/rdo-havana-test-day/ if you want to share information about the event with your friends and colleagues. All of this is very helpful in moving RDO (and upstream OpenStack) forward and making it better for everyone. (John and Xavier, please get in touch with your size and mailing address if you want an RDO polo shirt. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/rbowen/9677628249/ for a really blurry picture of what they look like.) There was also some discussion on IRC about doing this again following the Havana release on October 17th. Due to the timing of LinuxCon Europe, which many of us will be attending, October 29th and 30th were suggested as possible timing for the next test day. Please speak up with your opinions on this. This should allow any machine on the network to be able to access launched instances via their floating IPs. Also, at the end of this message, there are some ideas for making this process better that I thought we could discuss. These instructions have been tested on a RHEL 6.4 "minimal" install VM attached to the default libvirt network. Make sure all of your repos are set up first (this example uses rdo-grizzly), and you might as well do a yum update and reboot first to just because it makes things a little more foolproof making sure you have the right kernel, etc. # packstack --allinone --provision-all-in-one-ovs-bridge=n After completion, given a single machine with a current IP of 192.168.122.212/24 via DHCP with gateway of 192.168.122.1: Make /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-br-ex resemble: (note this file shouldn't exist, but does due to a bug) DEVICE=br-ex DEVICETYPE=ovs TYPE=OVSBridge BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.122.212 # Old eth0 IP since we want the network restart to not kill the connection, otherwise pick something outside your dhcp range NETMASK=255.255.255.0 # your netmask GATEWAY=192.168.122.1 # your gateway DNS1=192.168.122.1 # your nameserver ONBOOT=yes Make /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 resemble (no BOOTPROTO!): DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=52:54:00:92:05:AE # your hwaddr TYPE=OVSPort DEVICETYPE=ovs OVS_BRIDGE=br-ex ONBOOT=yes # service network restart NOTE: It is important to do the network restart before setting up the router gateway below, because a network restart takes destroys and recreates br-ex which causes the router's interface in the qrouter-* netns to be deleted, and it won't be recreated without clearing and re-setting the gateway. # . keystonerc_admin # quantum router-gateway-clear router1 # quantum subnet-delete public_subnet You need to recreate the public subnet with an allocation range outside of your external DHCP range and set the gateway to the default gateway of the external network. # quantum subnet-create --name public_subnet --enable_dhcp=False --allocation-pool=start=192.168.122.10,end=192.168.122.20 --gateway=192.168.122.1 public 192.168.122.0/24 # quantum router-gateway-set router1 public You should now be able to follow the steps at http://openstack.redhat.com/Running_an_instance_with_Neutron to launch an instance with external network access. Now, the question is how we make this better. Currently, Gilles Dubreuil is working on a patch to the puppet-vswitch module that can automatically handle the whole "move eth0 into the bridge and give the bridge its IP" issue. He's working through the last of the issues, but it is looking really good. If we are going to handle this automatically in packstack for people, though, it's really best if the external network interface is different from the one we are using for packstack since mucking with the interface you are connecting over is tricky. At the very least, if it is the same interface, then it needs to be configured with a static IP so that when br-ex comes up it will have the same address that eth0 had. Most likely things will pick up fine after the brief network interruption. So, if we go this way, then it would make sense for us to add a config option for PROVISION_DEMO_EXT_IF (which should be determinable automatically, but overridable), PROVISION_DEMO_EXT_POOL and convert the existing PROVISION_DEMO_FLOATRANGE to be PROVISION_DEMO_EXT_CIDR since that was it really is. Also having an option that toggled whether or not we actually did the bridge setup would be advisable. But, in the end it should be possible to have something like: packstack --allinone --use-existing-external-net=y --provision-demo-ext-cidr=192.168.122.0/24 --provision-demo-ext-pool=192.168.122.10,192.168.122.40 Note that this is using the br-ex stuff still. It is also not too difficult to eventually add support for provider networks as well. Thoughts? Message-ID: <52409D5B.8010807@redhat.com> This is from a while back - http://openstack.redhat.com/forum/discussion/348#Item_1 - but I wondered if someone has any advice, or pointers to a howto, for using VMWare ESXi hypervisors as compute nodes in OpenStack. I suspect that the O.P. has moved on to other things, but I saw some similar questions on ask.openstack.org and it would be great to have something written up on how to do this. Ken Hui has his article at http://cloudarchitectmusings.com/2013/06/24/openstack-for-vmware-admins-nova-compute-with-vsphere-part-1/ but it's not really a howto, but rather more about how things fit together. I installed Munin on two of our machines. The master runs in OpenStack, the first node I configured is the controller node of another OpenStack installation. Because of the high number of disks the "diskstats" plugin generates a lot of output (6154 lines, 218698 bytes). This much data kills the TCP connection between the master and the node. I can reproduce this with just a telnet to the node, port 4949 like this: # telnet 192.168.104.61 4949 Trying 192.168.104.61... Connected to 192.168.104.61. Escape character is '^]'. # munin node at CNT64IB003.example.com config diskstats ... lots of config data ... graph_info This graph shows the number of IO operations pr second and the average size of these requests. Lots of small requests should result in in lower throughput (separate graph) and higher service time (separate graph). Please note Connection closed by foreign host. The connection goes from the VM on the internal network through an OpenStack router to the external network and over a "real" router to the node. I have confirmed by using a different hardware machine that connection is OK outside of OpenStack and also by using an OpenStack VM as another Munin node, that the OpenStack L3/router is to blame, not the internal networking. For completeness, this is up-to-date Grizzly RDO running on up-to-date CentOS 6.4. I wanted to do just walkthrough the wireframes but I think that it will raise up some discussion around Classes and Racks, so my thought was to merge both together (wireframes + concepts discussion). At this meeting I'd like to get you familiar with my thoughts and get into some wireframes which will explain the ideas more. I hope that we will get into discussion around changes (not just UI but API as well). The scope which we will be talking about is MVP (not Hong Kong demo). I'd like to record the whole session, so if anybody cannot attend, I hope it will be available for you later. (Please note that Google Hangout has limited number of 10 participants, so if you consider just watching, please use youtube stream - link will be posted when available.) The video from that, in case you haven't seen it yet, is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afImoFeuDnY From the comments we received, it was exactly what some people were looking for, while other folks were looking for something deeper. It's that "something deeper" that we'd like to do next. We'd like to do a follow-up talk on more advanced networking, including GRE tunneling, VLANs, multi-host networking, and so on. Alas, neither Dave nor I have the technical chops to give that talk, and so we're looking for one of you to volunteer to do that. What we'd need is 20-30 minutes worth of content/slides, and the willingness to answer questions for another 20-30 minutes. October is pretty full, and OpenStack summit is the first week of November, but I'm sure we can wedge it in there somewhere, or schedule it after Summit, as works with the schedule of whomever volunteers. Can we count on one of you to do this? -- Rich Bowen OpenStack Community Liaison http://openstack.redhat.com/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
