This has worked fine for me in the past in other environments. I seem to be experiencing problems mentioned in the following bugs: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=151872 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=110036 Both of these are marked as "resolved" and the solution seems to have been either a patch or to modify settings on the switch to which my servers are connected. I am trying my setup with RHEL4 (latest update), and so my guess is the patches mentioned in the bugs above have already been merged. I can put in a request to have the spanning tree / port fast settings on the port for the servers in question tweaked, but I'm more curious as to why this problem is happening. DHCP requests from pump (via Anaconda during install) time out and no IP is assigned. I can assign an IP manually or use ISC's DHCP client from rescue mode or once the system is up and running to get an IP address as well without any problem. Why is it pump is unable to get an IP? Could its behavior be modified to mirror that of ISC's client? I feel that this should work regardless of the spanning tree settings on the switch. I am working on getting some tcpdump output of the problem, but am hoping someone out there has run into this and can shed some light on the problem for me even if it's just to tell me to adjust the settings on my switch. :) The hardware platform I'm running on are Dell PowerEdge 2950's. We use veritable sh*tpots of 1850, 1950, 2850 and 2950 machines around here and have to set up something of that nature on the 2850 and 2950, although we usually do a RAID1 on 2 drives and set up a single drive RAID0 (I think) for crashdump reasons. The 1850 and 1950 use a different RAID controller (LSI Logic). > Happy New Year! This has worked fine for me in the past in other environments. Well, this issue is almost certainly caused by STP. If I attach the server to an intermediary hub/dumb switch, things work fine. I tried booting with the nicdelay= and linksleep= options set fairly high, but no go. I guess STP should be off anyways. Weird that ISC handles this with no issues however. It will ultimately be an internet web / mail server. I haven't used Linux for a few years, but I have been working with BSD OSes. Red Hat Linux came pre-installed on this machine, and I'm wondering if I should re-install or just re-configure the current configuration. It seems as though the default install was a Workstation install - Gnome desktop is starting automatically. Is there any significant difference in the different kinds of installs? I gather that the Server install would partition the disk differently, but LVM, which is installed, seems to provide the same functionality with more flexibility, so I wouldn't re-install just to repartition. Also, I imagine I can disable starting the GUI at boot time, so I guess my question is, is there any benefit (other than an educational one) to me re-installing RHLE? Thanks. In my opinion this is a weakness of the e2label that RedHat has been fond of -- it isn't really clear what device is what when you are asking the system to boot off of it. So in your grub.conf, you'll need > kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2199.nptl ro root=/dev/sda1 rhgb ...assuming root is on sda1. Next you'll need to ensure that the /etc/fstab on the sata drive is correct so that it will find / and swap accordingly; I'll bet that those currently include the e2labels set at install time; change the LABEL=/ to /dev/sda1 and LABEL=SWAP to /dev/sda2 (as appropriate). Anaconda looks at the names of the CD images and expects them to be named exactly as they are on the download site. For the current Red Hat releases, that's RHEL-Ux-yS-discN.iso (where "x" is the update number, and "y" is either "E" for Enhanced or "A" for "Advanced"). Anaconda also has the MD5 signature of each image embedded in it so it can test the images and verify that they're correct. You can bugger Anaconda if you wish to, but unless you know how to write Python code, I'd recommend against it. > >>>> > >>>> > >>> You need to provide the path to where the ISO files are kept and the ISO > >>> files must be named EXACTLY as they are on the website. > >>> > >>> > >>> _______________________________________________ > >>> Redhat-install-list mailing list > >>> Redhat-install-list at redhat.com > >>> https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-install-list > >>> To Unsubscribe Go To ABOVE URL or send a message to: > >>> redhat-install-list-request at redhat.com > >>> Subject: unsubscribe > >>> > >>> > >>> > >> _______________________________________________ > >> > >> > I agree this is for RH/FC. I drive 70 miles a day, so picked up a Mazda 3i, standard transmission. The engine and tranny are Volvo-made. It's got a lot of pop for a 4-banger. Very fun to drive, and 35mpg ain't bad either. Corvette LS2 engine (400HP, 400lb-ft torque) in a Cadillac body--with a 6-speed manual to boot. 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Does suck gas like Dean Martin drank gin, but it's fun. The best thing is to give it to a valet. They get in and you often get a "What the f***? A Caddie with a stick? Something's very wrong here!" The Jag is, well, a 37-year-old Jaguar. Leaks oil, is a bit cranky, but also a lot of fun to drop the hood (top) and tool around in here on the coast in nice weather. "Why don't the British make computers? They haven't figured out how to make them leak oil yet." Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Overweight: When you step on your dog's tail...and it dies. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From dvantine at gmail.com Mon Jan 15 17:53:31 2007 From: dvantine at gmail.com (vbs) Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2007 12:53:31 -0500 Subject: OpenLdap server missing Message-ID: I need to use and a Directory Service V3 compliant Ldap source. I don't think an upgrade will work since you're already running RHEL ES4.whatever and I don't think the installer differentiates between 32 and 64 bit--just the version. I've never tried, however. My guess is you need a full install, but you CAN tell the installer to NOT format the partitions you already have. That way, user stuff will remain in place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - If your broker is so damned smart...why is he still working? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From rstevens at vitalstream.com Wed Jan 17 21:17:37 2007 From: rstevens at vitalstream.com (Rick Stevens) Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 13:17:37 -0800 Subject: OpenLdap server missing In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <1169068657.4013.176.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> On Mon, 2007-01-15 at 12:53 -0500, vbs wrote: > I need to use and a Directory Service V3 compliant Ldap source. There are several issues. First off, by default RHEL doesn't allow root access over the network--only on the console. To change that (and I do NOT recommend this for security reasons), edit /etc/securetty. It contains a list of the ttys that root IS allowed to log in on. Second, NEVER, EVER, EVER use telnet! It is completely unsecure. Usernames, passwords and ALL data is sent over the net in cleartext. Use ssh instead. And even using ssh, never log in as root. Log in as a normal user, then use "su -" to become root. Third, the POP server (dovecot) by default doesn't allow access by users with UIDs less than 500. Look at the /etc/dovecot.conf file for details. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - su -; find / -name someone -exec touch \{\} \; - - - The UNIX way of touching someone - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From rstevens at vitalstream.com Mon Jan 22 17:52:30 2007 From: rstevens at vitalstream.com (Rick Stevens) Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2007 09:52:30 -0800 Subject: where to find logs for getting info who login In-Reply-To: <503383.91344.qm@web50208.mail.yahoo.com> References: <503383.91344.qm@web50208.mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <1169488350.3557.19.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> On Sun, 2007-01-21 at 23:29 -0500, jason zeng wrote: > Hi, Cameron, > > Thanks for your prompt response. Try last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 by default, "last" tries to use /var/log/wtmp, however you can tell it which file to use by using "-f /path/to/wtmp/file/to/use". Reading the man page for "last" ("man last") for details. > > Thanks. > > Regards, > Jason Zeng > > Cameron Simpson wrote: > On 21Jan2007 18:32, jason zeng wrote: > | I am not familiar with RedHat Linux logs, and I am > encountering a problem > | that our important files disappeared. I'd love access to POST variables as well, of course, but right now what I primarily want to know is how can I catch the contents of a GET string to use in a RewriteCond. Concretely: I have a calling URI of http://domain.name/index.php?var1=value1&var2=value2&var3=value3 I want to redirect based on the value of a variable. PseudoCode: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{GET_VARS} var2=value2 RewriteRule ^/$ http://new.domain.name/path [R,L] Does anybody know the real code to make this happen? Any help VERY much appreciated. I dual boot Windows XP2 and Redhat Fedora 5. Windows saw the drive and put the icon about it being new hardware in the bottom window bar. When I tried to boot Linux it failed. I recently lost my Linux home drive due to what I think was a partitioning error. So, I shutdown and took the board out. Linux booted okay. So, I have been looking to find out how to install the HighPoint RocketRaid 1520. What if I install the 1520 in Windows, will that take care of the bios for Linux? I have search the Fedora Forum and Linux Questions and I have learned that the HighPoint driver doesn't work in Linux. NFS clients don't require you to open any incoming ports, all NFS client traffic is ESTABLISHED,RELATED. A default policy which allows outgoing traffic and incoming ESTABLISHED,RELATED will allow NFS clients to mount remote filesystems. An NFS server needs holes poked in the firewall to allow NFS traffic. > >>> also, with my local firewall running(?), web access works, but is >>> excruciatingly slow - like 45 seconds to open a page. >> >> That's probably because you have DNS blocked as well. Make sure you >> leave port UDP port 53 open (it might be good to leave TCP port 53 open >> as well). > > makes sense. thanks. If the client is setup to allow ESTABLISHED,RELATED traffic and not to block outgoing data then DNS ought to work. The only problem you are likely to see is with delayed responses due to your DNS servers having to refer to other sites. If this takes longer than 30s the DNS reply will be blocked by the firewall (the firewall opens a temporary hole to allow UDP replies, but this only lasts for 30s). The client will re-issue the request, which should work as the result is cached, but the overall effect is occasional delayed DNS requests. There is also the added problem of nscd which caches DNS, and it also has the bad feature of caching DNS failures. I would recommend that you poke a hole in your firewall to allow DNS replies from your DNS servers on UDP port 53. It shouldn't be necessary to do this for TCP traffic as the ESTABLISHED rule for TCP will handle it. Also, drop the cache time for DNS failures in nscd to a low value so failed DNS lookups can be retried. Look for negative-time-to-live in the hosts section of /etc/nscd.conf. IIRC, the default is something silly like 2 minutes. -- Nigel Wade, System Administrator, Space Plasma Physics Group, University of Leicester, Leicester, LE1 7RH, UK E-mail : nmw at ion.le.ac.uk Phone : +44 (0)116 2523548, Fax : +44 (0)116 2523555 From dpetracca at gmail.com Fri Jan 26 22:41:14 2007 From: dpetracca at gmail.com (Dominick Petracca) Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2007 17:41:14 -0500 Subject: file.iso Message-ID: <5279d3480701261441q604251eaj214e593633896fbc@mail.gmail.com> Hi, I'm just trying to practice with various redhat installs. No, you can boot off the first CD to do a disk install, but you must have all the ISOs in a single directory and use the "askmethod" parameter on the boot command line from the installer: boot: linux askmethod The alternative method is copy the boot image from the first CD to a flash disk and boot that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - You know you've landed gear-up when it takes full power to taxi. - - -- Chuck Yeager - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From dpetracca at gmail.com Sat Jan 27 19:33:34 2007 From: dpetracca at gmail.com (Dominick Petracca) Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2007 14:33:34 -0500 Subject: file.iso In-Reply-To: <1169865489.16290.29.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> References: <5279d3480701261441q604251eaj214e593633896fbc@mail.gmail.com> <1169865489.16290.29.camel@prophead.corp.publichost.com> Message-ID: <5279d3480701271133o6785548xb9cdcf07d8819bc1@mail.gmail.com> thanks Rick. (does it matter what I call the ISO files?) Yes, the installer is going to look for the exact filenames. I'm not certain what version of RHEL you're trying to install, but the format would be something like: RHEL4-U4-i386-ES-disc1.iso Change the "-U4-" and "-disk1" as appropriate. > But that puts the iso files on my current drive which I'm going to > install RH to so I need to get them onto my hda3 partition. > > I realize what I'm doing is kinda crazy but it forces me to get my > hands dirty..... Not at all. It's very, very common to do what you're doing. That's why the disk install method was invented! Many people put the ISOs on a removable hard disk (perhaps one that interfaces via USB) and install that way. Some do an http install, some a bootp/tftp install. Most do CD or DVD. Not really. Remember, RHEL AS3 was a 2.4-based kernel while RHEL AS4 is a 2.6-based kernel. Lots of things changed there (the C libraries, the directory structures, package contents, lots of stuff). You may get it to work, but it'll be a truly mucked up system. If you absolutely must have the latest openldap stuff, either upgrade to RHEL4 AS or download the source tarball and build it from scratch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - "More hay, Trigger?" Don't run the installer from the CD. As the root user, simply run one of these two commands on the command line: # redhat-config-packages (for RHEL 3 and earlier) # system-config-packages (for RHEL4 and later) This fires up the GUI package installer from the hard disk and you can start to install the items you need. IIRC, the 2650 uses the aacraid controller. You don't get to the Megaraids until you hit the 2850/2950 series. We use 1850s, 1950s, 2850s and 2950s a lot--I'm not sure about the 2650. The fact that the aacraid driver was loaded indicates to me that THAT's the controller you have. I did a quick survey of our stuff. The 18xx/19xx machines use the aacraid as well. We don't see Megaraids until we hit the 28xx/29xx units. > But > cat /proc/devices |grep mega > returns blank > > while > > lsmod | grep raid > aacraid 63041 4 > scsi_mod 117709 2 aacraid,sd_mod > > does not show megaraid > > But this shows both the previous megaraid and a more recent > > # locate megaraid|grep lib > /lib/modules/2.6.9- 42.EL/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid > /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.EL/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_mm.ko > /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.EL/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_sas.ko > /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.EL/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_mbox.ko > /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid > /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_mm.ko > /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_sas.ko > /lib/modules/2.6.9- > 42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/scsi/megaraid/megaraid_mbox.ko > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2 > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1 > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/.tmp_versions > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/redhat_driver_disk > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/redhat_driver_disk/modinfo > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/redhat_driver_disk/modules.dep > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/redhat_driver_disk/pcitable > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/redhat_driver_disk/disk-info > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/megaraid2.h > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/megaraid2-2.10.1-kernel2.4.20-16.9-all.tgz > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/ChangeLog > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/megaraid2.c > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/COPYING > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/patches > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/patches/rhel21.patch > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/patches/rhel3.patch > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/Makefile > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/megaraid2-2.10.1-kernel2.4.9-e.3-all.tgz > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/megaraid2-2.10.1-kernel2.4.20-9-all.tgz > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/make.log > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/AUTHORS > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/build/dkms.conf > /var/lib/dkms/megaraid2/2.10.1/source > > > Would shoud I do to have megaraid working ? > > Thanks for any tip. > _______________________________________________ > Redhat-install-list mailing list > Redhat-install-list at redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-install-list > To Unsubscribe Go To ABOVE URL or send a message to: > redhat-install-list-request at redhat.com > Subject: unsubscribe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens at vitalstream.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - I was married by a judge. The standard Linux command set now has lots of tools that provide similar functionality. However, you might want to take a look at Adaptec's website and see if there's anything there you want. > Any idea where I coudl download it ?
