I mean creating a folder like /test and mounting the smb share on that folder with all the parameters. e.g mount -t smb (or cifs) //ipaddressofserver/sharename /test -o username=usernameused password=password used. You can verify the exact syntax from the man pages. Windows 95 does not use encrypted passwords. I believe that the samba configuration on FC3, 4, 5, and 6 default to having password encryption enabled. Try digging into your /etc/samba/smb.conf file and make sure you have encrypt passwords = no set. Then restart Samba ("service smb restart") and try it again. For the record, the following Windows systems do NOT use encrypted passwords: Windows for Workgroups (Windows 3.11) Windows 95 (without SMB update) Windows NT 3.x Windows NT 4.0 (before SP3) All others use encrypted passwords. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Principal Engineer rstevens at internap.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Hard work has a future payoff. That's odd. Does "free" show any free memory? You did set up a swap partition, right? Is it being used? "swapon -s" will show you. If you're running a GUI, 700MB may be a bit tight and if you don't have swap, you could be running out of RAM. The odds are quite good that's the problem. Java VM sucks up a pretty good chunk of memory so it's quite likely you're running out of RAM. Try configuring and using a swap file. It's not quite as efficient as a swap partition, but it'll do. If you're unfamiliar with how to set up a swap file, here's some instructions. All commands must be run as the root user: 1. First, find a filesystem that has 1GB of free space that you don't mind being used by the swap file. Figure out which directory on that filesystem you want the swap file to go into. 2. Create the swap file: dd if=/dev/zero of=/path/to/swap/file bs=1K count=1M If you want a smaller swap file, change the "count=" value to what you want. The command above will create a 1G swap file. "count=512K" will create a 512MB swap file. 3. Activate the swap file: swapon /path/to/swap/file 4. Verify the swap file is active. The following examples will show commands and expected results. Your results will have different numbers as these are from one of my machines which uses a separate 2GB swap partition (/dev/hda6): EXAMPLE 1: [root at prophead ~]# swapon -s Filename Type Size Used Priority /dev/hda6 partition 2096440 40180 -1 (Your machine will have "/path/to/swap/file" instead of "/dev/hda6" and will probably say "file" under the "Type" column). EXAMPLE 2: [root at prophead IBRIX-UK]# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1024808 958992 65816 0 79988 283624 -/+ buffers/cache: 595380 429428 Swap: 2096440 40180 2056260 (Note the numbers after the "Swap:" label) EXAMPLE 3: top - 11:06:33 up 18 days, 38 min, 11 users, load average: 0.39, 0.43, 0.45 Tasks: 174 total, 4 running, 167 sleeping, 0 stopped, 3 zombie Cpu(s): 15.6%us, 2.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 76.7%id, 0.0%wa, 5.6%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1024808k total, 959112k used, 65696k free, 80032k buffers Swap: 2096440k total, 40180k used, 2056260k free, 283744k cached (Again, note the numbers after the "Swap:" label) 5. Make your new swap file permanent and startable on boot. Edit your /etc/fstab file and add the following line to it: /path/to/swap/file swap swap defaults 0 0 This will cause your system to activate the swap file when you reboot next time. Do that stuff and try running Java again. I'll bet it starts up. > On 5/15/07, Rick Stevens wrote: > On Tue, 2007-05-15 at 18:41 +0530, Alok Padey wrote: > > hi gurus > > > > I am facing problem while running java on linux(Linux > > 2.6.9-023stab043.1-enterprise) > > after installation i executed the command : > > java -version ,got error as : > > > > "Error occurred during initialization of VM > > Could not reserve enough space for code cache" > > > > I have also tried > > jdk1.5.0_06/bin/java -Xmx512M > > > > but no luck > > > > Have any one experienced this problem before. > > Any idea is welcome. > > plz show me light were to search > > > > The deatils are as: > > java : jdk1.5 > > linux: 2.6.9-023stab043.1-enterprise > > RAM: 700 MB(approx) 40% in use 60% free. > > > > [root at as private]# ulimit -a > > core file size (blocks, -c) 0 > > data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited > > file size (blocks, -f) unlimited > > pending signals (-i) 1024 > > max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32 > > max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited > > open files (-n) 1024 > > pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8 > > POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) 819200 > > stack size (kbytes, -s) 10240 > > cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited > > max user processes (-u) 71679 > > virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited > > file locks (-x) unlimited > > Hmmm. Delete that partition (be careful) and allow it to become unallocated space on the disk. No need to install a new one. All you need is to execute a few instructions as the vnc user and as the root user to get it going. If your linux machine is very remote, X will be very very slow, even if you compress the data stream. I've tried it and it was unusable. With vnc, I have a great connection even if I'm in the US and my linux server is in Europe. If you do want to run X, I installed cygwin/X on my windows machine. Either way you go, you should port forward X or VNC through ssh. If you use VNC, on the windows side, you can install the ultravnc viewer. I use the setup above (VNC server on linux and ultravnc viewer on windows) and it works fine. Below, I included the procedures I wrote for myself to get the vnc server on linux going. These work for me, but you may not have the same setup. Michael ------------------------------------------------------------ EXECUTE THE FOLLOWING AS THE USER WHO WILL BE RUNNING A VNC SERVER INSTANCE (i.e. the user you want to log into, not root) - Choose a vnc password and create the configuration files by executing the following command at the prompt: $ vncserver $ killall Xvnc - Edit the ~/.vnc/xstartup file: - Uncomment the following lines: # unset SESSION_MANAGER # exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to make them look like this: unset SESSION_MANAGER exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc - Replace the last line in the file : twm & with this line: exec gnome-session & EXECUTE THE FOLLOWING AS THE ROOT USER - Edit the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file and replace the word myusername with the linux user name who will be running a VNC instance: #VNCSERVERS="1:myusername" And make sure the VNCSERVERARGS line looks like this: VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 800x650 -nolisten tcp -nohttpd" - Edit the /etc/init.d/vncserver file and replace this line: # chkconfig: - 91 35 with this line: # chkconfig: 345 91 35 - Add the vncserver to the list of services to be started at boot time by executing the following command while in the /etc/init.d directory: # chkconfig -del vncserver # chkconfig -add vncserver - Verify the vncserver has been turned on for levels 3, 4, and 5 by executing this command: # chkconfig -list vncserver - The VNC server will now start at boot time; however, you can manually start it immediately by executing the following command: # service vncserver restart From rriley at procuri.com Wed May 30 17:25:32 2007 From: rriley at procuri.com (Richard Riley) Date: Wed, 30 May 2007 13:25:32 -0400 Subject: how do I access gnome/kde desktop from windows In-Reply-To: <904247.58762.qm@web8323.mail.in.yahoo.com> References: <465D1740.5040001@tootai.net> <904247.58762.qm@web8323.mail.in.yahoo.com> Message-ID: There are a number of free Xserver packages for windows. The two I have used are cygwin/x and xfree86. Either of these will work great with your Linux box. You need to make sure the Linux box has the xinitrc and xterm packages installed. These are standard RedHat Linux packages and can be installed remotely with up2date. You mention the Linux box is remote and if you don't already have it, get "putty" (also free) for it's "ssh" tool for secure remote access. Suddenly this evening I am unable to print to it from my Linux box (Red Hat 9). on attempting to print the file 'pthis' I get errors: lpr pthis lpr error - no default destination available lpr -P printer pthis lpr error - unable to print file: server-error-service-unavailable If I go into Gnome/system tools/print manager I get "No printers found. Run the printer configuration tool ?". On clicking OK and giving the root password the printer configuration appears, and it correctly lists the printer and notes that it is the default. But it gives the "service-unavailable" message when I attempt to print a test page. I have tried disconnecting the printer cable and letting Kudzu remove the configuration, then connecting it and rebooting, and Kudzu finds and configures it (so it says). Then on entering the Gnome configuration tool I find that the data are still there. (I even tried deleting them and recreating). None of this has helped. Any ideas would be appreciated. First thing is to make sure your printer daemon is running. Depending on your loyalties, this could be lpd or cupsd. First, make sure the daemon is running. Try "lpc status" and verify that you see lines like "daemon present" for each printer you have configured. If you don't, well, now you must figure out why the daemons aren't running. It could be that somehow the daemons aren't set to start at boot. In that case, you should try either "service lpd start" or "service cups start", depending on which service you use. Then try the "lpc status" again. If they appeared to start but aren't running now, you have more investigating to do. Start with the log files. First check the output of the "dmesg" command for anything suspect, then look at /var/log/messages and any other files in the /var/log directory that are related to the printing system (with CUPS, there's a "/var/log/cups" directory with stuff in it). We also have to ask...why are you still running RH9? It's over four years old now, it's got major security issues, it's an ancient 2.2 kernel, its memory management is atrocious, it's not supported anymore by anyone, etc., etc. You really should make the leap to something modern: RHEL, Fedora or CentOS (even SuSE, Ubuntu, Debian or some other derivative). > > _______________________________________________ > Redhat-install-list mailing list > Redhat-install-list at redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-install-list > To Unsubscribe Go To ABOVE URL or send a message to: > redhat-install-list-request at redhat.com > Subject: unsubscribe > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Principal Engineer rstevens at internap.com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Time: Nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From buzdavis at earthlink.net Thu May 31 23:23:38 2007 From: buzdavis at earthlink.net (Buz Davis) Date: Thu, 31 May 2007 19:23:38 -0400 Subject: printer suddenly disappeared Message-ID: <465F58FA.6080908@earthlink.net> Thanks to Bret Stern and Ted Potter for their suggestions. I found the problem and it is me, or at least my ignorance. I have been working up to networking several computers, and since I figured they couldn't all be named "localhost.localdomain" had changed the host and domain names. I checked direct internet connection after such changes but didn't realize CUPS would be affected. Obviously I have a lot to learn. CAN computers be networked without changing their hostnames ?
