First, double check that you have the serial port enabled in your system's BIOS (many disable it). Second, make sure the modem is powered up (you knew that). You'll probably need a null-modem cable to connect it to the PC. Serial port devices come in two flavors: DTE (data terminal equipment) and DCE (data communications equipment). A straight cable will connect a DTE device to a DCE device. Modems are DCE, but for some odd reason, some twit decided that computers should be DCE as well. So, to connect a DCE device to a DCE device, you need a "null modem" cable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer rps2 at nerd.com - - Hosting Consulting, Inc. - - - - A friend said he climbed to the top of Mount Ranier. I've used a TON of 2950s and very rarely had an issue with autodetect. There are SOME switches (usually really cheap ones) that won't play nice with autodetect, in which case you make sure the NIC and the switch are set to the same thing. Personally, I'd chuck the el cheapo switch and get something decent. Autodetect isn't that hard and if it can't do it, I'd wonder what else is marginal in it (collision detection, layer 2 routing, ARPs and a host of other stuff). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer rps2 at nerd.com - - Hosting Consulting, Inc. - - - - A squeegee, by any other name, wouldn't sound as funny. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From JDunn at sefas.com Fri Apr 4 14:06:11 2008 From: JDunn at sefas.com (John Dunn) Date: Fri, 4 Apr 2008 15:06:11 +0100 Subject: Inmternet Connection Wizard Message-ID: <2F802216565E44489600A03F763219A83E9504@mia.SEFASBRISTOL> I want to configure an internet connection on RHEL 5 but do not see the Internet Connection Wizard anywhere What rpm do I need for this? Message-ID: Hello Am a RHEL noob, so pls excuse the naive question; Wanted to find out if anyone has attempted to customize/edit your initrd's init script; what I'd like to do is to be able to: 1. grab the /proc/cmdline arguments passed on during a pxeboot of a diskless station 2. parse the commandline into variable so I can use to pass as argument to a service that's called within the current init script. Is this possible using /bin/nash? if so, how? Example (snippet of init script) - currently does this echo Attaching to iSCSI storage /bin/iscsistart -t iqn.2008-04.com.mylab.foo3:storage.foo -i iqn.1994-05.com.redhat:a950ce57a2bb -g 1 -a 192.168.17.3 - I'd like to: a. grab commandline parameters pass from the "APPEND" line in the pxelinux.cfg/ b. place it in variable, so that I can simply edit the above command and use the appropriate "target" value. c. In bash, it would look something like this: #!/bin/bash # | | var=` cat /proc/cmdline | cut -d " " -f6 | cut -d "=" -f2` echo Attaching to iSCSI storage /bin/iscsistart -t $var -i iqn.1994-05.com.redhat:a950ce57a2bb -g 1 -a 192.168.17.3 ====== I am a linux newbie, and just realized that /bin/nash is really not like bash ... any help or advise on how I can grab a commandline when running the intrd's init script? thanks in advance, -- A S P A S I A . . . . . . . . . . .. There is an "operator" user on standard Red Hat and Fedora installs, user ID 11, group root: operator:x:11:0:operator:/root:/sbin/nologin As is obvious, the operator user can't log in and would use root's home directory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer rps2 at nerd.com - - Hosting Consulting, Inc. - - - - If it's stupid and it works...it ain't stupid! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From bob at bobcatos.com Mon Apr 21 16:14:38 2008 From: bob at bobcatos.com (Bob McClure Jr) Date: Mon, 21 Apr 2008 11:14:38 -0500 Subject: screen resolution In-Reply-To: <2F802216565E44489600A03F763219A83E951A@mia.SEFASBRISTOL> References: <2F802216565E44489600A03F763219A83E951A@mia.SEFASBRISTOL> Message-ID: <20080421161438.GA27268@bobcat.bobcatos.com> On Mon, Apr 21, 2008 at 12:05:58PM +0100, John Dunn wrote: > I want to increase the screen resolution in RHEL 5 > > However Sytems Preferences...Screen Resolution only allows allows a > maximum of 800x600 > > Is this an issue with the video driver? Not if it has correctly identified your video card. Assuming you are running system-config-display, does it correctly identify your video card? How about the display? In my experience, if it doesn't correctly detect what your display device, it limits you to safe resolutions. If it has detected your display as some generic device, go through the selection process to manually set the display type. If your exact monitor is not listed, you may have to set it to something like "Generic 1024x768" or whatever best fits your monitor. > John Dunn > > Product Consultant > > Sefas Innovation Limited > > Direct Dial + 44 (0) 117 373 6122 > > www.sefas.com Settings/ransty/Application Data/Microsoft/Signatures/www.sefas.com> > > Sefas Innovation Ltd, CityPoint, Temple Gate, Bristol BS1 6PL, UK. On the display app that comes up I selected advanced and was able to change resolutions there. --------------------- When you are posting this type of message to the world, you might consider turning off your wordy signature. But recently my CDROM stopped working. So I want to install fedora from a usb stick (just like we install fedora from a CD). My laptop's BIOS supports booting from usb device. Can anybody point me to the right direction. I saw one article in the web about installing UBUNTU linux from usb stick. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-from-usb-stick.html But I guess the steps are different for fedora core installation.
