Message-ID: <748DB8BD55C9AC4FB9FC5A539E77CB561B797A@super-srvr.jmtg.local> I'm trying to update a brand-new RHEL 4 server using yum and I'm getting the errors below. This is a managed server hosted by Verio, so it's been somewhat customized for Verio's environment. Verio included dag.repo, rhn.repo and verio.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d/. I've done a "yum clean all" so you can see the messages leading up to the error: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------- #yum.repos.d]# yum update Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories dag 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 verio 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 rhn 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 Reading repository metadata in from local files primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 1.9 MB 00:03 dag : ################################################## 8703/8703 Added 8703 new packages, deleted 0 old in 47.82 seconds primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 27 kB 00:00 verio : ################################################## 89/89 Added 89 new packages, deleted 0 old in 0.48 seconds primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 685 kB 00:00 rhn : ################################################## 1808/1808 Added 1808 new packages, deleted 0 old in 9.32 seconds Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Are you getting the initial screen that lets you hit Enter to proceed or "linux text", etc.? If so, at the prompt, put "linux text" for a text-mode install. Could be that the installer does not grok the newer video hardware. Users will log in to the box to access the test environment, the box is running RHEL5. Once in, it's like the roach motel, no one gets back out to the real world from the test world. My firewall is working fine, but it seems to loose it's marbles and deny ssh but still allow pings from the outside after a day or two. Wiping out the tables and re-applying them corrects the issue but obviously this is a poor solution. Has anyone else seen iptables partially stop working like this? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Once, on a smoothwall where there was a bug with the MMS (multimedia) kernel modules. I disabled them (rmmod) and the firewall seemed to work fine after. I replaced it because it was on our main gateway, so don't know if there were other issues, or if the bug has been fixed. It would spontaneiously reboot after a time, or if certain types of multi-media were streamed. Annoying. If you see a single file, RHEL4.6-ia64-ES-disc1.iso, then you didn't burn it as an ISO image. You now have a coaster. :-) Check the docs on your burning software to see how to burn an ISO image. On the other hand, if you see several directories and files, then it would appear to be burned correctly. Then check your BIOS to make sure that it will boot the CD drive ahead of the hard drive. If the problem is still not identified, give us some more symptoms such as error messages and any other clues. Reapplying my rules after zero'ing out the tables was the only thing that cleared it up. What made me wonder about DHCP was looking at the DHCP requests on the private side of the network just suddenly started producing errors. The private side was also screwed up in iptables. I took that, figured going to static wouldn't hurt as a test, and what do you know, it's been stable since. I agree DHCP + Firewall is pretty common, but perhaps my implementation of firewall was too uncommon for the software to handle it. Wiping out the tables and re-applying them corrects the issue but obviously this is a poor solution. Has anyone else seen iptables partially stop working like this? Typical settings are boot order and activating the CD ROM as bootable. If these settings are correct, maybe run a checksum on the downloaded ISO. You'll need an md5 program that does checksums and then compare it to the one that RedHat provides on the download page. If the checksums do not match it means the download did not work correctly (not that uncommon actually). What does the computer do when it doesn't work? It would help if you could be a bit more specific about "can't get an X-Windows display", such as error messages or more detail about what happens. Remember that X went from XFree86 to Xorg between RHEL 3 and 4, so if you're restoring /lib[64], /usr/lib[64] and things of that nature, you may be stomping on the Xorg stuff you need to make it go. In fact, it's entirely likely you're stomping on LOTS of the system and I'm somewhat amazed it even boots up since your kernels, applications, libraries and such are fairly interdependent. Ideally, backups should back up everything, but you should only restore that which you need such as /home, /usr/local, /opt and things where you know your applications expect them. Another option is for you to boot up the new bare metal off one of the many live CD distributions out there (Fedora comes to mind) and use that to do the restore to get a functional system again. Note that it'll be the old RHEL version. Once that's done, boot the newly functional system and do an upgrade to the new RHEL you want. That way you have all the old stuff you had AND get the new RHEL. It's just a thought (and I've done it before). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer rps2 at nerd.com - - Hosting Consulting, Inc. - - - - The world is coming to an end ... Is this for RHEL4? For example, compat-libstdc++-33 (compat for std C++ library for GCC 3.3.4) compat-libstdc++-296 (compat std C++ library for older GCC 2.9.6) Those 2 are what is out there for RHEL4. Didn't check the others, but it should put you on the right path. up2date --install compat-libstdc++-33 Is probably the one you need for Oracle. You need to add something like "nopcimcia" or something to the command line when starting the installation. I can dig up my notes at home in several hours if no one else responds. I ran into the same issue with Puppy Linux on a Sony Viao. This is what is supposedly available. compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.3.i386 compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.3.x86_64 I was able to get up2date to install the x86_64 version, but not the .i386 version. Yet Oracle docs call for both. How do I get up2date to install both? If I give it the full name like up2date --install compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.3.i386 it says package isn't available. It seems to only recognize: up2date --install compat-libstdc++-33 If I add anything else to the spec, up2date says it doesn't exist. So I'm half way there. === Al ----- Original Message ---- > From: Al Sparks > To: Getting started with Red Hat Linux > Sent: Monday, March 31, 2008 12:39:38 PM > Subject: Re: Installing compat-libstdc++ on RHEL > > I should have done a > up2date --showall > before posting the question.
