Meaning we should start the portmapper as soon as we start some service that needs it and not start the portmapper if it's not needed.

If we can determine and configure this automagically, I
don't see how we'd be making life harder for anyone.



Begins to suggest that program that I can't remember the name of for the life of me. It actually in Rawhide briefly before 9 came out. It used an XML format to define services and what they depended on. With that app, you would add portmap as a dependency for nfs or xinetd (for sgi_fam) or any other apps and it would ensure that portmap was started before them.

Now I certainly realize that going towards something like that is a massive change to the boot process and is not something that would happen anytime soon, but it is an interesting idea.
