Can I just add a repository for yum, like maybe Fedora 10 (or perhaps an older version like 9 is more compatible with RHEL 5 core)? Or should it be a repo of sw built specifically for RHEL5? If so, then log into the RedHat Network and delete the system profile for that system from your subscription list. When you go to re-install on the new hardware, then you should be able to use the subscription number again and it will re-register with RH Network again.
