Thank you for your thoughtful analysis of my problems.<br>
<br>
My sound card now works.  Finding, downloading and installing ALSA from
atrpms.net resolved that issue.  I am surprised that ALSA is not part
of the six CD set of .iso files I used to move from Core 4 to Core 6. <br>
<br>
It was part of Core 4.<br>

Where can I read about this decision?   How we innocents meant to
cope?  Is/was this decision evident from the release notes?   Was it
decided between Core 4 and Core5?   I am missing something.<br>
