What i am thinking of is to use the existing volume-applet on the
panel to visualize setting the sound by using keys instead of another
popup like acme and gtkpbbuttons.

We would need only one daemon which listens for keystrokes and
generates the messages which are then displayed in a way conforming
to the running DE.
