OK, I upgraded to the latest (4.3.0-8) rawhide version of XFree86 and 
its various rpm friends (Xfree86*.rpm), and I worked my way through all 
20 or so of these options listed on the man page.

I found the culprit:          Option "XaaNoScreenToScreenCopy"

Adding this option made the symptoms go away; none of the others had any 
effect.

Of course, now I have a slow refresh when I scroll a web page, for 
example, if I leave this option enabled. So just enabling this option 
isn't much of a long-term solution.

Any further suggestions as to what to do?
