Strictly speaking, the software is installed on the hard drive, but you will at least need a motherboard too. A power supply is going to be essential, and a case wouldn't hurt (keeps the noise down, ya know). Sorry couldn't resist. Yes, there is a 32-bit and a 64-bit version and you may install either or both if you have an AMD64 system. If this is a server and you can afford it, go with RHEL 4. If not, I highly recommend Fedora Core 4 x86_64. Is there more to your question? Sounds like you are booting from the Windows disk drive and not from the FC4 cd. If booting from the FC4 cd, assumuing it is the correct image and was burned to media correctly, you will see isolinux start briefly and then the main Fedora install boot screen. I get VFS: Cannot open root device "NULL"or unknown block(3,2) Please append a correct "root=" boot option. not far into the boot process. Usually this kind of error occurs when the correct disk controller driver (IDE, SCSI, etc.) for the boot device is not installed. Here the boot device would be the CDROM drive which is an IDE device. I know that the CDROM is found because I get a bunch of boot messages listing what devices are found, and hdc is there (and the boot sequence does at least start and continue for a little bit, so stuff is coming off the CDROM). Neither the FC4-i386 nor the FC4-X86_64 rescue disks work. They exhibit the same behavior as above. The FC3-i386 rescue disk and CentOS 4.2 (x86-64) both boot a bit more than the FC4 installs, but then pretty quickly the screen goes black and nothing happens. Gnoppix 0.8 (i386) and Knoppix 3.8 (i386) both boot and run fine. FreeBSD 6.0-RC1 (amd64) boots and goes into the install process. And of course, the Windoze XP Home Edition that came with the laptop works just fine. Is there some boot command line voodoo I can use to get the FC4-x86_64 (or even the FC4-i386) version to boot properly? Is there anything else I should do or not do to get the x86_64 install to work? Putting back the hdd into the original machine and powering it up re-made the install-time configuration, I had nothing to tweak. This problem was seen with the original FC4 DVD and another, with refreshed erratas that I created with help found in: http://fedoranews.org/contributors/gene_czarcinski/update_distro/ I guessed it's a limitation of the above mainboard's BIOS as it doesn't like the following mkisofs options: mkisofs -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table \ -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat ... You're description makes me think that perhaps although the BIOS can read from the CD/DVD drive, the kernel on the install media can not. I have a new SATA DVD burner at home that does not yet work under Linux (getting close, though). I was able to use that drive to perform network installations just fine. Try this: place the CD/DVD iso files in a directory on any web/ftp/nfs server you have available. Then either burn a boot.iso, "dd" the diskboot.img file onto a UBS keychain drive, or set up a PXE boot. Do the network install, it should work for you. Also, I know this is a kinda "duh" suggestion, but did you run sha1sum on your CD/DVD image(s)? -- Lamont R. Peterson Senior Instructor Guru Labs, L.C. This list is fairly slow, so hopefully y'all won't mind this question. I'm looking at building a new desktop AMD64 system and am trying to decide on a motherboard to buy. I want one with an nForce4 chipset and preferably in the ~$100 or less range. As far as features, I would like SATA II (the 250 GB WD SATA II drive is slightly cheaper than the SATA drive!) and SLI would be nice, but not necessary. Of course, I want to run 64-bit Linux on it (FC4), so good compatibility there is a must. Decent onboard sound would be a plus, but again not critical. Quietness would be nice too. I most importantly want good quality and dependability. So, what brands do you like as far as quality? Or what specific (desktop) boards do you like? I'm looking hard at the GIGABYTE GA-K8N-SLI which is inexpensive, has SLI, and has the plus of having passive cooling on the north bridge (assuming it stays cool). The DFI nF4 Ultra-Infinity is right there at about the same price, has 1394 but no SLI. Any suggestions? Also, I could forgo the SATA II and get a board with just SATA and potentially save $10 - $20 (could either save a little on a Maxtor drive, or spend a little more on a WD drive, I'm not particular to either). Thoughts on that? I want one with an nForce4 chipset and preferably in the ~$100 Recently, my designated home-RAID-server-to-be has croaked, so I wound up purchasing a motherboard (Asus A8N-E), Athlon64 3000+ with Venice core, and an extra stick of 512 MByte DDR memory. Unfortunately that board took 24-pin ATX power connectors, so I had to purchase a new power supply as well, as mine was only 20-pin. I choose that board because it is cheap, doesn't have SLI (it's a server), has nForce4 ultra chipset with GBit Ethernet and 4 DIMM slots. I also verified the hardware was fully supported by recent Linux kernels (I had to use Ubuntu Server 5.10 AMD64, as Debian AMD 64 Sarge didn't support all hardware out of the box, while the daily unstable .iso images were, well, unstable. The only minus of that board is a noisy chipset fan which is prone to failures (I will probably have to replace it at some point). A deluxe version of that board comes with SLI and heatpipe cooling of the chipset > or less range.
