Yes, 2.6 is still bogus in that regard.

Which was the case in 1.0.0-rc2 as well presumably sysfs was accessibale.

Yes, sysfs is meant to be used in 2.6.
Is there a special reason, why you can't use it ?

If so, I need to think about the ioctl workaround you mention below
for such configurations.
