Thanks for the reply I will test it out this weekend. I did try gpart 
but get an error message. I read somewhere that someone had created a 
partition over the entire disk with gparted then used gpart to recover 
the old partition, I dont know if I want to try this, sounds like 
suicide to me. I havent had the courage to tell my wife that I have lost 
all our thousands of photos and personal files.
