This may not work as intented.  Here's what I get with "help" command
in augtool (hg version on Debian):

   AUGEAS_LENS_LIB
        colon separated list of directories with lenses,
        defaults to NONE/share/augeas/lenses

The workaround is still the same: use -I option for augtool.
